MAYBE. It depends on the most resent laws where you live. That is the problem with the legal system like BG said. In some states if someone breaks into your home and he is unarmed and you shoot them you may be liable for their injuries.
That can include pain and suffering payments as well. it has been done in our courts within the last few years in either PA or NJ. Our own legal system has turned against us. Plus lets say you surprize them and they turn to run. If you shoot them it can be considered murder or manslaughter, because he was leaving and no longer a threat to your or your family. Self defense has been redifined in some states as to whether the perpatrator was a threat to your life or not. If a 13 year old kid comes at you and you shoot him without trying to disarm him you can be charged with a crime because he is a minor and you should as an adult be able to disarm him making him no longer a threat. So all of these landmark cases are making shooting someone a real legal battle.
