Hi parlyzed, I did quite a bit of testing with these fans on my 1/8 scale systms. It seems about 3/4 of an inch or so is where these fans that I use produces the most thrust... I tested this by using a small digital scale that will do ounces accurately. Up close to the face of the scale, the thrust was not as much....not sure why, back it off a bit and the thrust picks up. Just to double check, I took several temp readings with the Castle Fan shroud on my 1/8 scale vs my fan set up...and the temps were always lower with my fan set up. That is just my experience. I have not had ANY luck with those fan shrouds. Now heat sinks with fans on them do well.
I also found that more of the motor heat is in the end of the motor (the side with wires coming out) That end of the motor is always 10-15 degrees hotter than the pinion side...this has been a common theme with all my castle motors... That is why I always install the fan towards the side of the motor with the wires. Never had a motor failure with this set up and they pretty much run cool enough to stay happy.
Again, just my experience. Do you have a brushless Baja...they are pretty dang fun. Thanks man.
