Yes, you can damage the ESC. I had the ESC mounted on the rear of the center diff at the top plate height and there were several close calls.

i've since created a much LOWER mount. The ESC is now about .75" shorter than the front shock tower. So if I happen to land lid first the wing, body, and shock towers will take the abuse and not the ESC.

I don't think the buggies are wide enough to mount the ESC off the center diff though, I only got away with it because I'm using a dual battery tray setup.




I later changed the mounts and lowered the ESC even further.

And here's its current location. Notice how low it is between the two shock towers. Its going to take a direct hit to nail the ESC. And if the hit is like that, it probably wouldn't matter HOW I mounted it.
