No doubt there is much testing that needs to be done, but I have made something like the first one using some chassis braces and a piece of alum-polyethylene-alum sandwich and it worked surprisingly well. Hopefully it will be able to take a beating, but if not it's back to the drawing board. I
did make the holes M4 because M3 seemed extremely small.
Which lower supports are you referring to?
