First Brushless Setup, WOW -
05.01.2005, 11:30 PM
My BK 7018, 8s, heatsink/clamp arrived in the mail last saturday. I've got a rustler thats been built for bashing but i also race at the track. I figured BL was the way to go, High speed and maintaining a 10t or lower motor would be alot of work since i run a few packs everyday.
Well, i assembled it sunday mourning just a few hours before races started. My friend has a BL 1/8th so i was ready and prepared for what i needed and how to set it up(reciever pack/programming of ESC). I had tim to run 1 pack through it before races started. :-/ I ended up being Top-Qualifier but DNF for the main due to radio interference. WOW, this thing has power. So fun i havent had time to post on here about it. Just got home from today's racing, finished 3rd with it, # 1 and 3 were BL, now people are pissed, and the track put a ban on Brushless Motors, for the 5 people that run them. The President of the club is talking about making a BL class, i hope so. Some of those brushed guys with the 8-10t motors were even pulling on us, its not like we have more power on 6 cells, nobody ever complained untill we started winning, retarded. People have been running them for 3 years at the track, nobody ever said anything, but this is the first time someone placed 1st with it.
But anyways, bashing is so much more fun. I've run 20-25 packs through it in the last week, havent busted a single part on the drivetrain(except the melted slipper, that's locked now), the diff is fine. I've done a few 10 and 12 cell runs, i'm really impressed with the power BL has. Once my buddy remembers his GPS i can get some ## on speed. WIth 12 cells, it looked even with my buddy's 1/8th on 18cells, and we clocked his at 52MPH with 18cells not that long ago.
About the heatsink, if anyone is planning on mounting it to a rustler tranny, your gonna have to cut away the motor cover from the bottom screw all the way to the top of the tranny. Leaving the motor completely exposed. If you cant make a skidplate/motor guard to protect the motor, I wouldn't recommend it because you WILL destroy the moter leaving it in the open like that. I made mine out of 1/8" alu and bent if so it comes up halfway over the tranny. Its taken alot of hits and holding up great. On 6cells the motor/esc barely get warm, 10-12 it gets hot, but i can keep my fingers on it forever so its not burning hot.
Mike, great site, great forums, very informative. I love wheelies.
