The Dark Impact and a 1/8 buggy both have different characteristics (I own both). The Dark Impact is a fun car to drive, and there's A LOT of aftermarket support for it. A123s won't fit into the stock chassis, but 3Racing makes a chassis (carbon fiber) that might be adjustable enough to allow you to mount the A123s into it. 3Racing also makes all other hopups for the DF-03, including front knuckles, carbon fiber shock towers, titanium turnbuckles, CVDs, nice shocks, etc., all at an UNBELIEVABLE price.
However, the 1/8 buggy will not need hopups to run well and to increase durability. Since it's a nitro conversion, you have more battery mounting options. If I had to choose, I'd definitely take the 1/8 buggy.
