Rule of thumb says to install any connector so there is no metal exposed on the device providing the power to avoid accidental shorting. When you solder Deans on batteries, you always use the female connector to keep the conductors somewhat protected. Same for the ESC. Let's say you put the male connectors on the ESC and the motor becomes disconnected. Now you would have exposed connectors on the ESC which supplies the power. If they happened to touch the chassis, you'd have some nice sparks and most likely a damaged ESC.
