Back to the GP keychain; couldn't you discharge to 0v and then insert a piece of metal from the + terminal over to the edge of the cell where the "can" is? Or, remove the insulating ring surrounding the + terminal and solder to the - terminal there. Keeping the cell shorted will prevent the voltage from drifting back up over time.
