Well, i partly agree with Metal; if both motors run at about the same efficiency, the L will get more hot, because it's got a smaller cooling area than the XL. I understand what you mean though, bomb.
The higher voltage systems normally run cooler, because at a higher voltage, the internal resistance becomes less of an issue.
I would not put my money on a 9L in a revo though. For 14 cells, i would pick a 7XL if you want awesome speed, power and less runtime, or an 8XL if you want decent speed, power and runtime. (if you don't push your 7XL too much though, you will get a pretty decent runtime)
