IMO there is nothing wrong with the MM... it's just telling you how low the volts are dropping on your batteries. It's not difficult to make a nimh drop to under 1.0v per cell.
Did you try 6.0V cutoff with a 2s lipo? That shoud feel much better than 6.5v.
Maybe it's possible that your MM isn't "calibrated" accurately so the voltage settings are bit off. But my guess is that it's just showing the batteries are dumping volts low enough for the VLC to kick in.
As Shawn P used to say, the LVC is a useful tool for limiting the power of the MM.
