It is metal to metal. I use some MIP lube on the pillow balls to keep the friction minimal. The knuckles are aluminum and the pillow balls are steel, so the wear is minimal (aluminum on aluminum would creat more friction). Some pillow balls are actually teflon coated(excellent idea).
