You say the switch does nothing.... but it should power on/off the esc. Perhaps there is a broken wire/connection somewhere. That would explain the esc not working and the switch doing nothing. Try cutting the switch off and twisting/soldering the wires together.
It's been a long time since I ran my Hacker. I forget the programming/use procedures....
