Emaxx racing, take out 2 speed setup? - 05.23.2008, 12:54 PM

The emaxx I got had the 2 speed setup installed. I plan to race the vehicle, so I am thinking of taking this out and putting the one speed setup back in. Is it work doing for racing?

During racing you dont really have time to think about shifting gears anyway, so it makes more sense to keep it as a single speed. A 2speed is only much good if you like to do low speed driving/crawling, have an underpowered motor, an outrunner that needs the lower ratio to get itself started turning, or an insanely overgeared high powered setup that needs the lower ratiom to get started too = high speed runs.

The 1st gear idler and output gear. Then just bolt the drivedog thing to the 2nd gear output gear and use 3 bearings as spacers where the 1st gear used to go (easy way). Or you can buy the Gorillamaxx setup- depends if you wanna do it the cheap way or nice looking way.

I ran my emaxx this past weekend against truggies. Guys were excellent drivers, so I knew what to expect but the vehicle did really well. I was happy with it, and the single speed setup worked well.

Vehicle performed excellent till the stock traxxas servos decided to take a powder.

To lighten the tranny a little, take your old 1st gear and cut away the plastic until you are just left with the hub. Then, use that as a spacer instead of the bearings.

Numpty!

Anyway, I have some pics of my tranny when I was converting it to single speed- both the cheap version and full version. Take a look on my website for pics, should give you some idea of what to do:

Pretend the coupler (silver thing) is the drive dog, and it is bolted/glued to the 2nd gear output gear in the same place. Then just remove the 1st gear idler (leave the shaft there though), and trim down the 1st gear output gear so that just the center is left to act as a spacer on the output shaft.
