Balanceing tap with six wire"s? - 05.27.2009, 06:16 PM

I just received a a new flightpower evo 5350 mah 4s 14.8v lipo battery.
I have used several lipo battery's before the ones i have now only
have 5 wires on the balanceing tap, this one has 6. I know it is only
4 cells, but what is the extra wire for?Iam useing a hyperion duo charger
for chargering and balanceing, and i need to change the tap plug to use
for my hyperion charger, but what about that extra wire?

Are you sure it has 6 wires, and not just 6 connector slots? If so, the postive wire is probably doubled up to tell the balancer that is the last cell in the pack. Some balancers, like the LBA10 use the main charge leads for this, while the older LBA6 had doubled-up balance wires on positive connection.

What I said above is an educated guess. I would use a voltmeter to verify each wire. Just be careful not to let the probes touch because "bad" stuff will happen.

If there is indeed an extra wire that either does not go anywhere, or is doubled up, you can cut it fairly close to the pack, fold it over, heatshrink it, and tuck it away somehow. Just be sure before you do this.

Yes i check the extra wire with a volt meter and it reads 0.0 volts, the plug has
six slots and six wires,i tryed to change the plug with a hyperion tap but the end of
the plug wires on the evo pack are to small.Do i need to change the plug end to
fit the hyperion tap,or do i buy a different tap plug?

Fp taps on 4s and 5s have 6 wires. They do that as they use the identical plug for both 4 and 5s. The first wire that is red will hook to the same place in the pack as the 2nd red wire, and the main pos lead. Some balancers do not like this extra pos wire, so you may have to delete it. I know that the hyperion 6 series chargers do not mind this when you sue the tp adapter board. Neither will a trakpower/flightpower v balancer.

As far as swapping it over to a hyperion tap, well I would jus buy an adapter, what charger do you have?

adapters can be found at allerc.com and maxamps.com I'm sure there are others but these are the two I know that have them for sure. MaxAmps lipos might suck but I really do like there website, very user friendly and easy to find the adapters and accessories that I need.
