MMM and mechanical brakes question

MMM and mechanical brakes question - 11.15.2009, 01:16 AM

Just got a new hot boddies d8 buggy and put it together and put in the mechanial brakes but wondering can i just put the servo on a y conector into the throttle plug with the esc on the reciever and dose this have any affect on the running of the esc. Or do i need to put on a channel of its own and go around it a differant way.

all you have to do is use a y adapter and turn the esc's brakes off.


They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

you can use a y cable, but using the 3rd channel and mixing it would be the best way to go. This is assuming that your radio can mix two channels.

Thanks all, i was just worried about the electronics in the esc as the servo i suppose is more basic in commparison and i was not sure if they could run together. I do have spectrum radio gear and i think it can do mixing but i may need more info on setting it up that way' Why is it the better way and the differance between the two setups.

Oh i also need to shorten the shaft on the motor as it enters the battery tray and hits on one of the lipo's thought it might be ok seeing these things come out with the castle set up as rtr but its way too long. Should i just cut it off with a small grinder and cut off wheel.

Dremel with a cutoff disc should do the job, just clean up any sharp edges afterwards- be sure to protect the motor to prevent any metal dust entering the motor.

Or you could use one of THESE, I use one in my Ve8, moves the motor away 4mm (as long as you have the room behind motor).

Thats just what i need it wold be purfect at 4mm just the amount i was going to cut off.
Pitty i would have to wait for it to get to aus.
How do they fit the flux tourqe sistems in if they are the same as the castle systems anybody know.

Hmm, trick photography?

You could always make your own spacer- 4-5mm thick piece of aluminium or CF even (with the correct precautions), then drill a couple holes in it for the mounting screws to pass through (3.5mm), and a larger hole in the middle for the shaft. So long as its done up nice and tight (without being too tight), it should stay mounted perfectly and not let the mesh slip at all- bit of blue threadloc works wonders too...

Ok, got things sorted on this one, got the 3rd channel working and ended up cutting down the shaft carefully.

But now im having problems with my brand new replacement MMM i just put in yesterday. It is working fine with just the esc plugged into the reciever but when the steering servo or brake servo is plugged in it just seems to have a fit and nothing will work as the reciever lights flash on and off and the servo's twitch.

I have tryed differant servo's differant reciever's and checked all conections on the esc but nothing seems to change it.
I removed the red power wire from the plug and put a external bec on the esc and found everthing works fine this way even with both brake and steering servo's in.

So im guesing the internal bec has a problem and yet again will have to send it back to castle and this will be the 4th time this year i have had to send a MMM back to castle this year from australia and its getting frustraiting.

Thats highly unusual...

Difficult to say what could be causing besides a faulty BEC like you said, though there are a few things you could play with maybe. Check your epa on the steering servos to make sure they arent maxxed out and binding- that would draw lots of current and drop the bec output voltage enough for it to spaz out sometimes (or just run red hot and thermal even). Also, try plugging the esc into the servo slot on the rx and check its opperation like that- then stick the servo into the throttle channel to see how it behaves.

Since you tried other rxs and servos it does seem likely though that its the esc to blame, which is a shame as BEC problems are pretty much a thing of the past with the MMM..

One last thought- do you have anything like a glitch buster capacitor you can plug into a spare slot on the rx? You can use a ~25-30v, ~1000-4000uf, 105*C rated item with a spare servo pigtail soldered on if you fancy making your own- radio shack will have the caps, or a decent hobby store/ electrical repair place.
