Turnigy 2S1P 5200 Hard Case 30C not good for ERBE? -
12.08.2009, 12:43 PM
Edit: I don't know why I typed ERBE in the subject. My bad. Habit. I won't be running these or any 2s Packs in my ERBE. I run my ERBE at 6s via two 3S lipo packs. I was mostly concerned with "do hard case packs tend to puff more often then a soft, and can this deal be too good to be true?"
Hey guys... I was looking on HK's site... and they have these Turnigy Lipos for only $24 each! That doesn't make sense... considering the soft 5000 mah packs are nearly $10 more per pack. How can that be?
Anyway, I was always under the impression that Hard Case lipos aren't the way to go unless yer racing. I'll be bashing, and thought they would be nice for my Summit or Emaxx for the winter (or summer too). But will they get too hot? I know they probl won't in the winter. But I was just wondering if I should get some of these and not look back, or pay the extra and get the soft packs?
Thanks!
Jason

Yikes, we're back to Life Packs now. Mind you ... when I'm talking about cold, it's pretty cold. Like 30 degrees out. But realistically, I'm only running like 30min or so every now and then. Is that still really bad for a lipo? I hate having to deal w/ the Life packs because they will be putting out so much less voltage. And using the EVX2 ESC, means I can only use 2s per side, which is still like what... 13.2 volts?? What kind of run time am I gonna get using that on a 4500mah pack??

Lipos are fine in any weather, they just need to stay between about 75-120F. Pretend they are a newborn and do what you would with a baby to protect it from the elements,
you know, blankies n stuff.

I'd advise against hardcases, sorry forgot that bit!
The plastic cases are-
1. gonna make it impossible to watch temps
2. transfer too much cold into the pack
3. take up space that could be used for some thin foam sheeting (blankie)
I used some ~4mm white packing foam last winter, the kind that won't absorb water.
Coldest I ran was about 10-15F.
You could still run those packs, but I would recommend taking them out of the cases.

Well, that's good to know. I have no incentive to buy the hard case packs, except for they are $12 cheaper for whatever reason. And if you can just pop them out of the cases and shrink wrap them, that would be fine. I can't see what the diff is btwn the $23 5200mah Turnigys, and the $34 5000mah Turnigy's. Both are 30C and the "newer technology". Unless getting the case off of them is a trick. I'm handy w/ shrinking stuff, so that's not a problem.

Well I know some guys use saran wrap to more or less waterproof their packs. I myself am more concerned with insulating them, I think it's way more important the packs stay warm to slightly hot, than waterproofing. Unless you are completely submerging the packs I don't see that as being an issue. Between 85 and 105F would be a good cold weather target range.

I dig what yer saying. I was thinking more of shrink wrapping what I take out of the case, then as you said, finding something to wrap them in to keep the temps up. I bet that keeping them in a warmer, or at room temp before going out can't hurt either though. Thanks!

Oh, I checked out yer page Redshift... cool bikes! I'm not a bike owner, but they are bitchin. I saw this Kaw Ninja Trike conversion the other day in a dept store parking lot. I took pix of it on my phone. It was something else! It looked really mean! I think it had a chain drive. It was slick!

This should have been in my first post- This is what happens when you try to suck em down cold.
http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24836
Remember the temperature gets MORE critical as the C ratings go up. For example you have a 10C rated pack (I know, there's only one company making those, and they are labeled at 60C, sorry that's my random stab at MA today) it will be pushed much harder, and produce more of it's own heat, sooner. Take a 30C pack that normally won't get hot even in the summer---- you see the problem. I would even suggest preheating, as I did in the linked thread. Just keep em happy!

Not sure if I like the trike... But it is different that is for sure! Looks like they took the design of a chain drive 4 wheeler for the rear swingarm. Someone put some time into doing it that is for sure.
I had an almost identical bike to that, save it was a 900cc. Nice bikes, rode very well and was quite comfortable for 2 up riding. Actually had 2 of them, a 99 and a 2000. Now I have a 2000 12r, not as comfortable, but much faster/quicker!

I have to agree. zx9's are comfortable. I had a 2000 gsxr750 and it was comfortable for a sport bike but now that I am a little larger I dont think it would fit me as well.
Think my bike days are done though. Cant strap a car seat on one :) .

Nope. Like the work, but you don't take the bike out of a bike. Because then it's not a bike, and you don't have a bike. And well, it's just not a bike.
A full chicken-strip tire is for old men, and trikes are quite dangerous in many ways.
Great for Mr. Jurassic on his Goldwing, but not a sportbike!
Like a Lamborghini with pontoons....
