What's wrong with posting in old threads?

This is just something I've always been curious about. On almost every forum I've ever been on if someone posts in an old thread there are always comments along the lines of "You know this thread is xxxx months/years old right..."

Why is it frowned upon to dig up old threads? As long as the topic is still somewhat relevant and the person posting has relevant conversation to contribute I don't see the big deal. Sure the OP may have come and gone but the conversation can still continue. So what am I missing here?

I think it's better than starting another thread for a previously discussed topic, even if it was a looong time ago. You could throw that at whoever complains...

Good point. I don't dig up the old ones myself, but I've always noticed it seems to be frowned upon and never knew why.

Usually because its served its purpose and reviving it is just redundant

^ I partially agree with that as well. If you aren't contributing anything productive to the old thread then just read it and learn and be done. If you have something extra that wasn't mentioned and hasn't been addressed since then by all means post away!

In my opinion they are all active forums. I could care less what is asked or dug up and don't get why others get in such a big knot about it. Life's too short to worry about crap like that.

The search one is another thing, yeah you can use it, but if someone doesn't I fail to see how it affects you so tremendously you have to give a keyboard thrashing to the individual the reposted the topic.

But again I don't know why people let things on a forum affect them as many do. Just go on pirate4x4, they really take everything personally.

If you don't like something or don't want to answer, then don't post. Unless someone is being obnoxious or just plain stupid I see no reason to care.

I find this thread offensive. People should just KNOW everything. I do. Not really that hard, being this great. I guess I am special.

I have done it myself, but not to make the person feel bad, but because it is usually somone new to the forum who just did not realize that the topic or thread was so out dated. I did the same thing when I first joined RCM, and someone made a comment about the thread being two years old. Not knowing how the forum actually worked at that time I was just learning and did not think to look at the date of the last posting. For sure I learned very quickly to look at the date before posting anything on any thread from that day forward. Sure it was embarrassing to me and it did kind of tick me off, but after being on the forum for a while I realized that it was not really meant to be an antaginistic comment. It was just stated because it was obvious that I had no idea how old the thread really was. No biggie.

lol, this thread is funny. Linc is obviously delusional there, but we can expect that.

Personally, I think digging up an old thread is ok for updates or similar questions. That way, a search works better (when people actually attempt to use the search).

IMO, depends on what it is. If you dig up a unique thread, like a crazy build thread (like TDC's death machine) and ask a ? or for an update, then that's cool.

What is slap worthy digging up an old and outdated thread and adding useless info to it. IE "Should I get a BK or a Schultz for my 16 cell LSP?- 02/13/06"; Reply 04/15/10: "Don't get those old escs n00b! Go get a MMM and some lipos! Don't mess w/ that old crap!"

Not only does it now show up on the "New Posts" for everyone, someone else might miss the timestamp, reply and get sucked into your vortex of stupidity from which there is no escape.

In my experience, the people yelling at folks for digging up old threads are the same ones who yell at folks for starting new threads instead of using the search button.

New members may have questions relevant to a thread also...nothing wrong with bringing up old threads if it's continuing the topic on a sensible level
