Brushless Revo? -
09.24.2006, 02:54 PM
I am converting a revo into a brushless. I lightened the chassis and made battery holders and installeds an E Maxx tranny. My problem is that I have some esc's and motors and I am unsure if they are adiquate for this set up.
I have:
Modeltech esc(emaxx setup-3+years old)
Modeltech motor(emaxx setup-3+years old)
BK 7018 esc
Lehner Basic 5300 motor
Is any of this worth using. I plan on running 12 to 14 cells(3300)

Welcome to this forum Paulie!
What KV value has the modeltech got?
the 7018 is good for the job, unless you get a motor that's not too hot. (such as a 1800kv wanderer L-can) The basic is too hot for this application.

I don't know the kv on the modeltech. And there is no info available at their website. I don't think they do BL anymore

Okay, that's not too easy then. what type is it? how long is it? how many cells can you run thru that esc?

The motor is the sive of an hv-maxx motor from novak. It has an 1/8 inch shaft and bolts right in. I is much longer than the 5300.
I have run 12 cells through the esc with some heat but nothing extrordinary. That esc doesn't like breaking, breaking causes it to heat up quick.
The motor is purple like a hacker

Perhaps you can use that on your revo? can it handle 14 cells? then you could try a 4S lipo setup. (which is light) meaning less stress on the controller when braking.

Can my 7018 handle 4S lipo setup. I know very little about them.

Yes, it can.
it can handle up to 20 cells (at 1.2V per cell), while a lipo is 3.7V per cell.
You need to keep a close eye on the lipo's though. They may not be discharged under 3V per cell. The 7018 hasn't got a so called low voltage cutoff (LVC) so you need a separate one, which is easy to install.
the 12L would be a nice motor. Why an L over an XL.. weight.. Pure to keep it lighter. an L rotor is easier to spin up than a larger XL rotor (more mass) the L will spin up pretty quick and will jump from it's place. (don't get me wrong, an XL is pretty impressive too) i used to drive my 7XL on 3S lipo. (S means serial, while P means parallel) It was fun for bashing.
Somehow the smaller rotors seem to spin up faster and feel more peppy..

Yes, but the smaller motors seem to heat up a good big and don't like alot of weight...

Yeah, Paulie;
the 7018's are relabled to 7020, after BK discovered they could take 20 cells with ease. It might have looked a bit odd when i posted the 20 cells story..

I appreciate the help. I think I will see if I can find a better motor and run the 7018 and see how that works for now. Thanks for the help every one....
