Help me with a few questions... - 10.24.2007, 07:51 AM

I need help picking components to build a race buggy. I was going to convert my truggy, but decided that I want to stay with my buggy. Since our points series just ended, I am ready to start the conversion. I will be converting my Kyosho mp777 WC with big bores. I want to use a Neu motor, but am unsure which one would be best. I am planning on getting the 14t, 15t and 16t pinions and was also going to pick up the plastic Kyosho spur. Will I need the 46t or 44t?

As for the lipo's - I realize I will need two packs. One for quals and one for the mains. We run three 5 minute quals and a 15 min main. I was planning on two MaxAmps 6000HV 4S2P packs. Is this overkill or can I use a 5000 or 4000 pack for weight savings?

Finally, what esc should I use? I want to wait for the MMM or Tekin options, but without a release date, would that be wise? I plan on a few runs at an indoor track this winter to shake it down, so I am not in any immediate need.

I realize I left off a few things like a BEC and motor mount, but I figure the questions above are the big decisions that I need help with and should be able to handle the rest.

I think a good set up for you would be a Neu 1512/2.5d (2000KV). The Max Amps pack would do fine, but there is better out there. A Trakpower 4s1p 5000mAH pack should last a whole 15 minute race. As for the ESC, if you don't feel a need to race until January about, then I'd suggest you wait for the MMM, but if you do plan on doing some races between now and then, then the MGM 16018 or Quark 125b have done great for many people and would be a good option for you to consider. You can also consider the Mamba Max ESC, but it doesn't seem to like the Neu motors very much, until there is an update in software at least.

The MGM would not need an external BEC, since it has a switching BEC inside. I am not sure whether the Quark would need one, but the MM would definitely need one on 4s.

Im currently converting my Kyosho 7.5 Kanai 3 to brushless for racing too. I'm going to just go for it since i dont expect the MMM or the teken Speed Controls till at least the first of the year (from what ive been reading anyway) and im getting bored of my buggy. but as far as gear wise im running a 1515 1y/f with a mod'ed MM on 4s1p 5000 Mah 30C Neu Batteries. im getting around 15-17 min run time and its not much heavyer than my normal buggy. and i have the CC bec to help out with the servo's.

With a 1512 1.5y/f, geared 14-46 using a MaxAmps 5000maH, i'm getting 23 minutes.

i only use one pack for a day of racing with the same format of 3 quals and a 15 minute main. I even run the 5 minute warm up. Temps never over 138.

the only thing i don't like about my mgm is the 5v switching bec. i will be getting a castle bec shortly! i run a 5955tg steering servo and it slowed way down with only 5v!

Yea I didn't like the lower voltage either I wound up changing my servo to a 94359 to get the faster speed on 5v. The 94359 is only 160oz but .13 speed at 4.8v. 160oz is plenty of torque for a buggy and so is the .13.

The .19 you are getting on the 5955 at 5v is to slow and 250oz is way more torque that you need in a buggy.

I found a Neu 1512 1.5 D/F motor used for $230. Is this a good deal?

You still converting your Buggy? i just finished mine and would love to see some of your pics if your done with it

Yes. Dan over at http://www.rcproductdesigns.com/ is using my buggy to do some prototyping and designing of new parts for the Kyoshos. I know he is designing a new side pod that will double as a battery tray. I don't know what else he'll be designing, but I figure since I am done racing until spring, he can let his imagination run wild!

Right now I am just trying to determine what the best products are for my goals of a competitive racer. I have read so much on esc's and lipo's, I think my brain is ready to explode!

Well i just finished mine and im going to the track with it on Friday. I'll let ya know how it does. Its a 4s setup with a neu 1515 1y/f on a Mamba Max Speed control. from the "speed" runs i did at work, the esc seems to work fine with just a hint of cogging at very low speeds. I for one am definatly going to upgrade to a MMM when its released (i hope Hobby people will carry it) but as of now, My Mamba max is working fine for me ^_^
