smoked a sidewinder esc! haha -
02.22.2008, 02:09 AM
so i was hooking my emaxx up and i have a 3000kv motor by mtroniks and i have a 4 cell lipo and i wanted to see if the sidewinder would be able to handle it lol. so i hooked it up and turned it on and after setting it up i hit the gas and the wheels spun and BAM! smoke starting to come out of the esc like crazy. hahahah
i have never seen a esc burn up so fast.
so i put it in the box and put a defective tag on it and walked away hahahahaha
i love work at a hobbyshop. get to experiment on different things .

Did you use a UBEC or a seperate rx pack? If not that's probably the reason it blew.

A Sidewinder on 4s with no UBEC? That's not the best idea...

haha it was funny too cause when i took it out side to drive it in the parking lot. the citizen patrol came by and said i cant drive it in the parking lot cause its a saftey hazord haha. i was like wtf! i have been doing this for 3 years and we have been here for like 7 and been doing this every day lol.

Put a ubec on that bad boy! If only to make the servos work properly! Funny about the defective tag, you sound like the guys at my lhs, they are always doing that kind of stuff, and the defective parts bin is always full too!

be careful messing with the citizen patrol, if they shine their flashlight in you eyes its really bright and is somewhat uncomfortable

"DEFECTIVE" is not the term I would use. Sounds to me like you were not operating the esc within CC's documented specs.
Honestly...using that little esc in a monster truck, without a UBEC, and at 4S just doesn't make sense.

I did a test a while back with just a 0.25A load on 3s equivalent and the BEC chip on the MM got VERY hot VERY quickly. Servos typically draw more than that, so the heat would be worse. Rule of thumb: Anything over 2s = use UBEC.

I dont think he was actually trying to make it work. Its sounds like he was TRYING to blow it up just for kicks. Wastefull, but justified in his mind by the fact that sombody else had to pay for it. Not him.
Certainly not something I would be proud of doing let alone posting it.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

I'm with jhautz, but a bit further. I would equate this with stealing.
You might as well have said "Here, let me take your $75 product out of the box, plug it into something that will surley fry it, make it smoke, then send it back to you as a $25 used and defective part. While I'm at it I think I'll go to my favorite RC forum and post all about how much fun I thought it was, to guys who want the company I just stole from to succeed".
Mabey you should have put it in the trash and gave your work the $75.
Theves, liars, and people with no work ethic make me angry.
If I could only draw what I see in my head, then afford to build it, and finaly get to play with it...

So the manufacturer paid for it. Which in the long run gets passed on to its customers. The customers are us! So we are all the ones who pay for stupid stuff like this.

This is true, but why should I pay for your stupidity! No matter how small amount it is to me.
Use a ubec dude, and the sidewinder should last.
