9920 or mgm 160 - 08.14.2005, 02:58 PM

Ok, i officially HATE my mgm 80 controller and am to the point that if I dont get rid of IT, i will be converting to nitro. So having said that, which controller would be best for a stadium truck. I want it to have a good bec so no receiver pack, and i want SUPER easy to program (thus both are programable via computer), i typically will only be running either a 6-8 cell nimh pack or a 2s or 3s lipo. So what do you think and how much do you think I could get from a slightly used mgm 80 controller? its to the point that i like the slow novak 5800 more than the mgm system.
thanks

The MGM 160 isn't computer programmable via computer.
The 9920's BEC isn't any good on 6-7cells, but okay on 8.
I wonder the same thing as Serum... What don't you like about it, the programming?

i had it programmed and it worked a little while. i made sure everything was setup for lipo. i ran the pack a bit, then discharged it to make sure i got the lipo setting correct, i did. ok, so that was last week, this weekend, i charged up the lipo and took it out for a run, it keep loosing its mind. everytime i would punch it, it would lose all throttle and brake, would have nothing but steering.(now that i think bout it, i could have it set in motor cutoff by acident..maybe). so all that was saturday, today (sunday) i decided to reprogram and try it again. I go to reprogram and the esc wont take a program, all it does is beep contineuosly. So far, it has ran right for less than two complete battery packs. to me that is total BS, i want something that packs the power is like novak ( super freakin simple to operate for people that hate dealing with electrical related issues)

don't let it get to you.. have some patience. you will get more power from this setup than from the novak. i still don't understand what the real problem is (your story isn't quite clear to me). Perhaps Mike can help you out.

@ metalman;

The new 9920 should have got no problems anymore with BEC and 6-7 cells.

If the MGM is giving a continuous beeping/flashing, that usually indicates that there is an error. Have you looked at the manual for the error code?

its actually been a continueous problem. I have talked with Mike and we was great with walking me thru the programming. i got it working and it worked for about 1 pack and then i didnt use it for a week until i got my lipo charged up. when i went out to run it...nothing but problems.
what it does is lose the throttle and break completely ( no control) when i give it full throttle. it doesnt matter if i do it off the line or when i am already moving. as soon as i punch it, i lose all control (except for steering).
when i went to program and try again yesterday, the controller just does the continueous beep. i looked at the book, didnt see anything helpful, will look again when i get home.
i have had this thing for several months now and not had too much success, that is why I am looking for something else. i know novak doesnt have the power, but it doesnt give me any problems either.

Does it contunously beep with lipo or did you try the other battery pack?

Did you reconfigure it for the NiMh/NiCd pack (for the voltage cutoff)? Try running a fully charged Lipo with the cutoff set to NiMh/NiCd (in the programming).

If the controller is programmed for a 3s lipo, it will give an error code if you try to plug in a pack other than this voltage(so, a 6 cells nimh pack will yield an error code). The cutout you are experiencing is due to low voltage or high current drain.

ok, well here is my setup. the mgm80 with the 6s motor. all this is in a t4 that is modded for the street (lowered, lightened, no slipper, modified tranny). i was running the 2s pack (right after charging it on the ICE charger) with approx. 31/104 gearing (like i said, modded for street). as long as i never punched it, it would go, as soon as i went full throttle, it died. i have been pretty pissed with rc lately, so i havent even touched it in a few days. the last time i did, it was giving the consistent beeping and wouldnt do anything.

It sounds like the voltage is dropping on the Lipo pack and causing the controller to cut out. I had this issue myself. I actually changed the battery parameter back to nimh/nicad and the problem seems to have disappeared(I wish I had done this a couple days ago, as I had the cut out issue at the RC-Madness race, which cost me some time!). The constant beeping would suggest that you may have the battery setup on 3s Lipo or something besides nicad/nimh or 2s lipo. If theis parameter is set to anything besides nicad/nimh, the controller will beep the error code unless the proper battery is plugged in. I struggled with this myself, but I think I have the quirks pretty much figured out.
The 160 amp controller is a sweet thing, by the way. Once the bugs/uirks are worked/figured out!

I have the same issue with my MGM120A. It just beeps continuously. It is very frustrating as the controller is only 5 months old and has never been wet or over heated. I can't even get it into the programming mode. The controller was very sweet before all of this occurred.
