It'll run better on 3s than 2s in terms of performance. I forgot the Kv, but I think you can even get away with a 4s while keeping it under that 50k RPM "explode-a-rotor" limit. 4s would be a helluva lotta power in a Rustler or 'Pede though.
The KV rating on the 12s is 2958,roughly the same as the 8L but a little less weight.I ran one in my Rustler with 4 cells...easy 60+ mph.But get that tranny upgraded or kiss it good bye.
I used to have a Stampede with a 12s running on 12 NiMH cells. Top speed was about 55 mph, so you should be able to go 30mph on 2s. IMO the 12s is a great motor for running up to 4s in a rustler/stampede.
I now have a 12s on 4S in my rustler and so far I like it alot. Its geared 17/87 on M2Ks (little undergeared I think.)
It does low 50ish I think (snagged a curb before I got to radar it. No big damage tho, just needs a pin.) Amp draw peaks at ~60A at the current gearing for a comfortable 850-900W. Controller stays cold and motor so far has not got too warm, even in grass.
Now 4s in the rustler is fun. It wasn't long ago that I was say 2s is plenty fast. Lot os fun. Well didn't start out that way. I bought an Ammo 36-50-3300 (price is too good not to at least try it) and also a 12s. The ammo got here first. So put it in my rustler with 4s and notice it had a lot of punch even sitting on the bench. Turned out the exp so was so sensitive. Got it out in the street and WHAM. It flipped over backwards so hard it snapped my lexan chassis in half. A bit bummed it was a homemade job and put a lot of time into it routing out the bottom, shaving off weight, polishing. It wasn't the thin stuff either this chassis was made out of 3/8" lexan. Well it was starting to crack around the transmission mounting screws on one side. So I didn't get much run time that night on the ammo swapped everything onto a stock chassis. But the last couple of days I've been running it on 4s and it is a screamer. I order a couple 3s lipos to use for it. Don't seem to ever get full throttle on 4s. Got a fan on the motor and MM and they've been running pretty cool. Using 58/19 was the best I could come up with for gearing but seem pretty good. Got the 12s in and might give it a go in the stampede. If it does as well or better then the ammo I'll be happy. Thanks for the input you guys.
