Little help deciding on a truggy or buggy. - 03.29.2008, 12:15 AM

Wonder if I could get some thoughts/opinions on my next project. I just got my ESC back from Novak and a remanufactured HV4.5. So that was what I was thinkg about using for now as a motor and esc "Novak HV4.5" running 4s. I was all set in getting the Turmoil then I saw the GS Racing truggy. It's another 100 more for it. What would you suggest or what would you get. I'm not into racing right now so it's mainly just for bashing. The Turmoil is a great deal like you guys said. I've been watching prices of buggies/truggies. I'm not sure about the XUT.

I don't know any thing about the GS XUT. Haven't even read up on it yet. I read the Turmoil has a issue with the chassis flexing. Anyone heard about that?

Thanks again for the help and opinions. I'd like to get a decent setup to start off with and if I like the 1/8 buggy/truggy arena I can step up to something different later.

i think that motor would be suitable for something lighter - i would go with the buggy.

i would also get the 5mm motor upgrade that novak just released...

If it were me I'd be all over that XUT. It looks sooo nice!

Just make sure you'll be able to gear the 70,000+ RPM properly...

Stick with the buggy, the novak system will not be able to pull the truggy around and stay cool, or not melt!

The 5mm shaft upgrade is mandatory. I did it to my 6.5 and it looks to be a good motor. I plan to use mine in a crt.5 with 3s lipo.

One of the problems with using a HV4.5 in a 1/8th is it's hard to get the gear ratio low enough to not overheat them.

Okay, that helps me out. I was going to use the novak as a temp until I got a NEU to put in it. I will now sell the Novak system I got and get a NEU motor. I sent in two HV ESC and just got them back w/ the 4.5 motor I had replaced also. So I will basically have a new HV4.5 setup to sell. Should get me close to the NEU price. I had two esc burn up on me just sitting in the RC's. So with the luck I had with them I better sell them now. I got the 1515 1y in my revo, I am still trying to make sense of the 1515 1521 etc number scheme. I wasn't thinking about the size difference with the 1/8th. I will go check out BrianG web page and see what motor might be good. I'll be back...

Thanks again.

Okay so now that the Novak motor and esc isn't an issue. Truggy or Buggy?

Does a 1515 2y sound right for a motor? Not sure if I am entering the correct information into the motor selector page. Concerning gearing mainly. If the motor is a lower KV does it take more voltage to get teh most out of it? Don't know if I am asking the right question or wording it correctly. The 1515 2y KV is half that of the 1515 1y KV.

I generally try to get my motor speed around 35k rpm. The neu motors can handle higher rpm, so you can most likely shot for 40k to 45k rpm. So you take the kv and multiply it by the voltage and you will get a max motor rpm. So 4s lipo=14.8v x 1000kv would be 14800kv, as an example.

Running a motor too fast will cause it to get hot, and too slow will require to much gearing (load) to reach the desired speeds. The 1515 series will easily push a truggy to 40-45mph, which appears to be the popular speed for most people. So you generally have to balance the voltage your esc can run with the motor kv to get the motor to spin at the desired rpm. Then you just gear for the speed you want.
