1/10 4WD Buggy

Hi all

I'm looking for a new RC, different to my FLM E-Maxx that i can just bash and not spend allot, I've seen several kits, and the $209 kyosho Lazer ZX-5 ready set keeps popping up, very afordable, any thoughts on this one, is it brushless frendly?
Going for 2s lipos and consecuently a brushless system.

also i like the Losi XXX-4 but ther's no RTR just kit, with all the extras it is over the $ I want to spend.

just want to know if I'm missing others.

Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 (cheep, hard to get parts, few aftermarket)
Losi XXX-4 G+ (kit expensive)
Tamya Dark Impact (I don't know Tamya)
There should be more (is late and i'm tired)

ZX5 comes in RTR form and kit form and is best value for money. The Tamiya kit will be harder to get parts for than the Kyosho.

I got lucky on E-Bay and just bought an Xray XB8 EC for $250 including shipping. This truck sells for more than 600 so thought it was a win -win deal..

Don't forget the Academy buggy. Good buggy and price. Also available RTR.

I have the zx-5 sp (kit) and love it. I have not had a buggy since 1986 rc10 gold pan and all i can say is WOW they have come a long way!

Are you going to be racing or just bashing it? if just a basher I high recommend the zx-5 as it does not require saddle packs. and with BL and Lipo it balances nicely. if anything I am biased a bit to the motor side on 2s, 3s is abut perfect but unwieldy fast.

and parts are easy for the kyosho, just getting them local is a pain.

wow! those are very nice buggys I like them all, is it worth it?, I mean kit vs rtr for a basher i go to the local track ocationally, no serious races, everything else is just fun. Is it worth the extra $ for a pro kit?, will it be more durable?

Pro kits tend to be less durable (at least with associated). I know that the factory team kits for the B4 and T4 use a compressed carbon chassis instead fo the stock plastic chassis. They do this to reduce weight (car will then go faster, you will stand a better chance to win the race). But the over time you would be more likely to crack the carbon chassis (the plastic has more flex, it can absorb more of an impact).

so you say that CF will last less than Kyosho's plastic? Another question is Carbon Composite different than say, traxxas plastic?

They are not CF they are compressed carbon (aka shredded carbon pressed together, not long strands of carbon bonded together).
Think of it this way:
Compressed carbon is like MDF board while carbon fiber is like layered plywood, one is lots of small particles bonded together, the other is layers of material bonded together, a CF chassis would probably be fine for a 1/10th, but the compressed carbon can shatter after a bad jump. I am not saying it will shatter every time, but if you want something to bash with and be durable, a plastic chassis would probably be preferred over a carbon chassis because the plastic (kyosho or traxxas, or associated rtr/team) would be able to flex a little upon impact where as compressed carbon will crack.
I will admit that the factory team version does come with some better upgrades (at least my t4 did). So it might work out well to but a Factory team version and the buy the plastic chassis tub of the RTR, but that does start to waste money.

the rtr lazer zx will handle a mm4600 or VXL system either on 2s lipo easily youd be really happy with it and you cant beat it for the money, main problem is the bottom of the chassis has holes in it letting dirt in and it usally goes straight for the spur gear you can search on the forums and find the gear cover i made for my gf's it survived an entire day at the track and we only had to stop it once to get somthing out of the spur gear. Im looking at making my own lexan under body for it or maybe adapting a b44's underbody to fit it. this would solve the only problem we've had.

ok thanks, i'm starting to understand the concept, I'll guess I will start with the rtr kyosho just waiting on confirmation on amainhobbies for international shipping and i'll order some graphite or aluminum towers. thanks all for al the help.

cmcclive I think i found chassis covers for the lazer on ebay may work
