Hyper 8 Buggy on 6s -
03.20.2008, 11:34 PM
Latest build here, first some background on my ideas. So most people seem to think that a L can size motor can move a buggy around fine. I agree, and also wanted to a 6s lipo powered setup. And I also have a few 1600kv motors laying around. So I looked for a decent test bed, and ended up with a well used hyper 8. $130 shipped, and it already had the rcm motor mount. Talk about a good deal.
So I picked up a pair of flightpower 2170 3s 25c lipos. My thought process is that the 2170 packs are good for about 55amps constant, and 1200 watts. I had a MBX buggy with a 7xl and 4s, and it pulled about 1300 watt peaks. So I figured the pair of 2170 in series would be ok.
I also had a quark 65 roadster hanging around. Now I am sure that many will say it is a bit small. and may not be able to handle 6s. Well it seems fine so far. I added a novak 2700 cap, and am running a ccbec with the quark internal bec disabled.
First batch of tests will be with an Align 600l. 1620kv, and is a hybrid outrunner/inrunner design. Power output is very smooth, and temps were very good in the first 15min test. I would have run till the lvc kicked in, but I do not have a decent battery tray made up yet! My next tests will be with a hacker b50 15l.
Heres some pics: And yes I really like zipties!.
Check out the super low cg!

Nice!! Looks good. How is the weight distribution over all? It looks to me like the handling would be a bit off with the batteries so far off to the side...
Keep us updated.

Yeah, it is a bit off. When I make up a battery tray the batteries will be moved slightly forward, and in as far as I can to the center. I will most likely angle the tray out at the back to clear the center diff. My velcro and ziptie affair was just to make sure the motor/esc would actually work!
I will also mount the quark to a al plate and use the stock motor mount holes to screw that plate to the chassis. I will most likely use thermal epoxy to hold the esc to the plate.

Nice Linc. I'm curious to see how you make out with the Quark 65. I ran the 80b on 5s for a while in one of my buggies and never had a problem with it.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Thanks Jeff. I have had great success with my 65 in the 2wd emaxx on 5s. It is running cool on 6s, and not cogging with the align.
I am not sure if I like the align, it does not spool up fast enough. With the emaxx tranny it was better, I guess the increased torque helped make up for the slower motor acceleration in that case.

I'm happy to see another electric Hyper 8. It sure is a sleek looking buggy, no doubt.
Couple things:
How about moving the Quark above the center diff? It will get more airflow there, provided the buggy's body will have a hole in the windshield. This will also allow you to mount the batteries closest to the center of the chassis, with the lowest CG (although strapping them in will be another issue).
The front to center of the chassis is terribly braced. At one time I noticed that my Hyper 8's chassis was bent where it isn't braced, and I haven't yet come up with a solution for this on mine.

Well. I will build the battery tray and see what you guys think. I would like to keep the quark on the chassis, both for heat transfer and lower cg.
The front bracing to the servo box does look a bit suspect. Why not use a hyper 7 brace? It is more like a std buggy brace.

Battery Tray Pics! -
03.21.2008, 08:33 PM
Ok, made a battery tray, used some kydex (thanks rchippie) and cut out a shape. Took the heat gun to it and folded the sides. Used a carbide bit and cut slots for the velcro to go thru. I will have to make a pair of al spacers to raise it up to clear the dirt guard. Pics show it mocked up with some scrap kydex as spacers.
I will also move the receiver to the top of the servo, and clean up the wiring. I need to make a plate for the quark to attach as well. So far I have not drilled any holes in the chassis, and do not intend to!
Charged my batteries back up from the initial run, which was 12-15mins long. I put back just under 1100mah, so I think that 20mins or more will not be out of the question. I will give the align motor a few more packs, then switch to the hacker 15l b50 and see how it does.

how are temps? I have been considering going 6s on my buggy for cooler temps.

Thanks Mike, could not have made these trays without your help!
bdebde, I have only run for about 12 mins or so, but nothing was very hot. The motor was around 100f, batteries and esc were cooler. I need to get everything mounted properly and put a body on it. Then I can beat it up and let you know how it does. Considering how much I pulled from the batteries, I suspect it will run reasonably cool.

Finished the Battery Tray! -
03.22.2008, 10:14 PM
Made some al mounts for the battery tray. Used 1/4 inch al bar stock and trimmed it to fit, drilled and tapped it as well. Mounted them to the chassis using the gas tank holes. Still need to fab up an esc mount, but ran out of time.

Hey James, i've a pair of 2170mAh, 3s flightpower too, do you think i can run it in serie in a buggy with my Neu 1515, 1Y???
And what run time do you think i'll have aproximatively?
thank you

Missed this post, sorry David!
The 1515 may draw too much, what is the kv on that motor? A 1512 with kv around 1600 should be fine in a buggy with these batts.
I am very impressed with this setup, just need to get a body on her and run few packs. Plus I just bought a medusa v3 60mm 1500kv motor to test out with this setup. And I have a hacker b50 15l, and a c50 14l to try out.

Medusa testing -
04.19.2008, 08:37 PM
Went ahead and put the medusa in the hyper8.
I will have to say that it is very powerful. It is rated at 1500kv, but puts out the same rpm and runs the same speed as the align 600l. It is rated at 1620kv and I used the same gearing. Plus it spools up faster and runs cooler too.
Ran the buggy for about 15min and temps were very good. Motor was around 130f and the batteries and esc were not much over 110f.
Had a small issue with the quark 65, it exploded. Smoke went everywhere and all of the solder melted off the board. Luckily nothing else was damaged. I guess that I overdrew the esc? It was not warm, maybe something came loose? So I replaced it with a quark 125 and it worked fine during the 15min run. I have no idea why the quark 65 let go, but it sure was cool when it puffed!
I weighed the buggy, with the batteries it weighs 3449.2 grams, and without batteries it weighs 3097.6 grams. So that is 7.6 pounds with batteries and 6.8 pounds without.
