Neu finned or smooth

I have my eye on the Neu 2.5d moters and I see the finned is back in stock.
Is the smooth can a better fit? I have a supermaxx suspension . Gorilla single
motor mount, Quark 125b/ monster heatsink w2 fans. I also run spyder 8
diffs. Currently I run Wonderor 8xl with apachee 3700 5s. I plan to continue running 5s. I have plenty of room for pinion clearance . Do the fins diminish any clearance? I also run a Strobe 51, with 16 18 20 pinions. mostly bash
in the sand at local beach.

If your using a stock motor mount I think 18t is the smallest pinion you can use without grinding some of the fins off the finned version.
If your talking about the 1700kv 1515 2.5d on 5s, then you shouldn't need to go any smaller than 18t anyway for normal bashing and standard size tires. I'd probably use the 20t mostly.
If your talking about the 2000kv 1512 2.5d on 5s, then 18t should be ok for most stuff if your using standard size tires, but if the sand makes things get too hot you may need a slightly smaller pinion, or the 65t ofna monster pirate spur (needs a few minutes with the dremel first).
Standard 540/550 smooth cans - 36mm diameter
Smooth can neu - 39.6mm
Finned can neu - 43.8mm

I run 5s on a 1515/2.5d (1700kv) Very strong setup. Good thing you got the best diffs you can use. I'm using the HB hardened diffs and they are holding fine

Do the fins make that much a necessary cooling differance regarding the NEU? I perfer the smooth cann for more pinion options, I plan on runnig 5s with a Neu 1515 2.5d but only the finned is in stock. Running a gorilla single motor mount/strobe 51.

With the gorilla motor plate, you shouldn't have the trouble we are talking about, with the clearance. The motor sits opposite the tranny

I think someone here on the forum was saying theres like a 20deg difference.

How do you get those heatsinks on the larger 39mm diameter neu cans? Are they made for the larger neu's?

Its Integy and Integy means very weak parts so you can plug this heatsink in any motors.

If you can fit a finned can motor, go with it. My finned Tekno RC Neu runs, at the hottest, 145 degrees after ~40 minutes of bashing in 90-100 degree weather without a body on. Yes, you can add a heatsink to a smooth can but it is not as effective as having the fins directly on the can.

Yes always make the finned motor your first choice but don't be afraid of the smooth if you find one on a good deal. They are outstanding motors best in the world.

I have a smooth 1512 2.5d on my revo. After 30 min of straight race running on 4s, my motor never broke 140.

Up here in alaska are average temperature is about 70deg and the smooth can neu's run cool as a cucumber. Right know I'm running a 40mm cooling fan on a smooth 1515 2d (2050kv) on 4s (30,000 rpm's) in a 9 pound ofna violator 9.5 buggy with truggy wheels and komodo low pro's...after 25 minutes of thrashing my motor temps are only 105deg my mm control is 115 and my polyquest pack is at 90deg all super low temps.

thats got to be in the summer and not the entire year.........
