Question brushless set-up ??? - 10.24.2008, 03:11 AM

hyper 7 , mm esc , nemesis blue xlt motor , 2 x's 2s5000 true rc lipo's , 46 and 15 gears . motor and esc got hot today after about 10 to 15 minutes of run time. dont know exactly how hot , but was hot to touch after about 6 or 7 seconds so i shut the buggy down. is this a good set-up ? and is there something i can do besides a fan to cool things down ? maybe a cap ? and where would i solder the cap, to the pos- and neg- on the mm's battery conector wire's?? help , somebody please!

Well, without knowing how hot things got we don't know if there's a problem or not.

Typically 140 deg. won't let you hold on for more than about 5sec. (depending on your tolerance to heat), so assuming that's the case for you then your setup is fine. The best thing to do would be to pick up a infrared temperature gauge like the Duratrax Flashpoint ($25) so we don't have to make any guesses.

If you were to solder on a cap, you'd want it to be as close to the ESC as possible. If you have a good soldering iron you can attempt to solder onto the ESC, more specifically the cap would be soldered right under the battery leads on the circuit board (to positive and negative).

If the MM shuts off, and then beeps its startup tone some seconds later, then it's either the BEC that shut down or thermal shutdown. Are you using an external BEC or a receiver pack?

The ESC should thermal at about 200-220 deg. F, which you won't be able to touch for even half a second without being burned. So if the ESC is thermalling, then either you're super-human or there's something else going on.

do you know the winding rating? the motor could have a a small number of windings causing it to have a higher amperage draw (heat)

its a 60,000 rpm motor , finedesign doesnt list a wind or kv rating. put a riciever pack in , still seems kind of hot. is a reciever pack or bec better? im gonna tool around with the mm settings some more . i think i have my brake set at 40 or 50% , ill drop that to about 10 or 20 %. that should help even though im not on the brake very much. any more input is appreciated tremendously guy's! thanks anthony antoher ? , should i run a cap- also ?

a Nemisis is actually a rebadged Feigao which is a 2 pole 40k tops motor and thoses ratings are without a load, my guess is its a low wind motor pulling a lot of amps causing your electronics to run hot...Finedesign doesnt have a good reputation with CS in the RC world

besides getting a different motor lowering the gearing will reduce stress on the motor ( larger spur/smaller pinion)
