Allowable front bearing "slop"

Welll i had my buggy all stripped down cleaning today and noticed a little bit of play at the shaft of the Nue 1515, mine is the latest version with the big bearings (like the teckno and cc verisons) i bought it in july i think from mike...id ahve to look but anyways ive only been running it a few months i guess and was wondering whats the allowable amount of bearing slop before i need to replace them?

right now i measureing it by clamping the motor to my bench and then lifting the shaft and setting my caliper to zero and then pressing it down and im getting .72 mm of total "slack"........


any input?

Does it still try to rip the tires off the rims and shear the teeth off of every gear on the vehicle?

I think your measuring end play. That won't tell you if your bearings are bad. You need to measure side to side play for bearing condition. If you feel any side to side play it's time to replace the bearings

Here is the response I got from Steve Neu. I would recommend you contact Neumotors and ask them if you should send it in for a check-up. It will take awhile to have the motor checked out, but on the other hand you don't want the motor to come apart on you.

the bearing arent side loaded... so to say but i measuring right agianist the motor right at the bearing not at the end of the shaft. it prolly has the same miniscule amount of play when trying to push the shaft in and out. but the bearings arent moving then only when going up and down and i can see the inner race move in the shield.

and end play does matter quite a bit because if it gets bad the bearing will go out just the same and prolly burn something up or strip something on its way......

well im just a little over .028" of play.

Well if you actually have .72mm of side to side play the bearing is garbage. If you have .72mm end play your fine

no the bearing dont have that much side to side play i ment the shaft would move in them that much front to back in the motor can, the only play i have is end play.

ok, I was refering to side play. As mentioned you can have some end play and be ok.

If you can feel the bearing move side to side its probably bad or going bad. Had one Neu motor that had a front bearing fail. and I could just feel it move, I sent i tin and they repaced it for me. After that the motor ran quite a bit cooler also.

In and out doesnt mean anything is bad.

i guess ill call neu today and see if i can buy some bearings, id rather not send it in as we were going to try and go to the last race of this season's series this weekend

One way to tell if there is side play- run the motor on the bench out of the vehicle and if it makes a HORRIBLE NOISE then the bearing is shot. Seriously, it will make a horrible noise because the shaft will start to orbit inside the area of play. If there is no side play then it will just sound REALLY cool!
