Un-named project -
10.15.2008, 05:41 PM
Dunno what to call it yet, but I have some ideas I want to try out.
How well do solid axles from vehicles like the Axial crawlers handle normal speed running? Doesn't necessarily have to be an Axial axle specifically, just something similar. And by "normal speed", I mean like 35-45mph - not crawling.

Depending on the suspension setup they do fine. I have a high lift f350 from tamiya and it must do 25mph and even with leaf springs and friction shocks it handles fine.

Think of the Wheely King - it wasn't specifically designed for crawling right out of the box, yet can actually take a lot of abuse. A friend of mine has his set up for ~35mph, and since he lengthened it (~12in. wheelbase now) and swapped out the stock 3-link for a 4-link, it has been just fine.
Just FYI, if you're doing a 1/10, you're gonna want to use Wheely King axles with a widener kit. The Axial axles are just too narrow for anything but crawling.

Suspension will be much stiffer and not nearly the travel length. It will probably have the same basic setup as a crawler, but much shorter links.

I tossed a Mamba 4600 in my Wheely King :) ...Lots of fun bashing around the yard but handles like crap.
Definately needs wideners and extended wheelbase

Brian, I have some Axial axles and Axial tranny with slipper clutch if you're interested. :-) FWIW, I do believe the HPI MT2 hardened diffs will fit in the Axial axles.

The gears will fit (I've got them in my Axial axles), but the input on the pinion is 5mm and round with a hole through the middle for a screw pin. This would allow the use of a drilled out T-Maxx tranny output yoke to be installed (which is designed for a 5mm shaft) along with T-Maxx driveshafts. I know, because this is what my crawler uses .

Nothing yet. It's just in "idea phase" at the moment. Right now, home improvements are consuming the majority of my disposable income.

I got two words for you, Twin Force. I have a twin force and can say its pretty stable, Sorry I have no experience in other cars. The one i got is one of Promod's, that he sold last year, The one with the New Era extended alumnium chassis and has a center diff, He also had one with a CF chassis and was in his 4s 50 MPH TF vid. I broke the outer housing and trying to locate a new plastic one, That's a bit tougher than i expected, but plan to get it together once again soon. I can post pics for those who haven't seen it yet, But don't want to step on, or hijack, BrianG's thread. If you can find one, A Twin Force or Mad Force will give you a leg up on stability
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna
People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

Yeah, pics would be nice. And don't worry about hijacking the thread, it happens on just about every non-locked thread on here, so it's par for the course.
Not after stability per se (would be nice though), but want something that is solid with metal gears. I like building things that last and will sacrifice having a heavy vehicle than replacing/fixing main components.
