Can length and a couple of other Qs - 02.07.2009, 08:04 PM

Hi all. I had a look at the faq and searched the forum, but could not find an answer, so here we go;

How does can length affect a motor?

I am looking for a motor for my crt .5, and it seems the 3300kv 36x50mm medusa v2 is what I want (is that right?). How would the 60mm version differ? I guess it is simply more torque? Would that benefit me at all? I haven't decided whether I want an onroad racer or an off-road truck yet. I am using a MM esc on 3S.

And can someone confirm that the MR-036-050-3300V2-5 is the right motor? (I really would hate to order the wrong one!)

And finally... I know some people on here don't seem to like Maxamps very much, is there a reason for that? And if so, can anyone suggest a better brand?

Thanks
KiZ

A 50mm Medusa is more than adequate in a crt.5!!! The 3300kv is a good choice for 3s. I have a 36-50-4800 that I run on 2s in my crt.5. A bigger motor is def not needed! Mine has never been over 130*, plenty of power, wheelies occasionally, and good runtimes. Medusas' are awesome motors and the 50mm series is a great choice for the crt.5. Your voltage determines kv.

As for the batteries the reason why MA is looked down upon is that they are not rated properly. They are 15C discharge at best, they tend to go out of balance alot, and are over priced for what you get! Many on here have had good luck with zippies but Enerland based cells, (such as polyquest, flightpower, thunderpower, neuenergy, and enerland) are considered the best. I started out running 2s 6000mah MaxAmps in my crt.5 then switched to a 2s 5000mah Neuenergy and the difference was day and night!

SC10 MMPro 13.5T 2s NeuEnery 5000mah
RC18T Mamba 25/5400kv 2s lipo + 6s NiMh

Motor choice looks good. A longer can motor will produce more torque, and will also have the ability to handle more load, and ultimately can prouce more power (watts). A 60mm motor is not really necessary for the .5, unless you plan to run very heavy tires, or gear it to the moon.

As far as lipos go, erevonut has got it. Neuenergy lipos are generally the best priced of the enerland based packs and work well. A 5000 25c 3s lipo will easily handle your setup and provide plenty of punch andruntime. Maxamps are just overpriced for what you get, bottom line there. If you want some more lipo info, check the repair thread in my sig.

Also, the PolyRC packs are well-priced enerland cells. Neu packs are on sale at the moment. Check them out.
