IE8 is crap IMO. At work, we use Crystal Reports and IE8 refuses to let it run. So now, I have to either get it to work somehow, or recreate around 50 reports to something Micro$oft deems worthy. And my company uses IE exclusively so no chance of moving to FF, Opera, etc.

While on the subject: all this heightened security in the browser is bullshit (excuse my French)! If people are so dumb they get viruses or have their ID stolen every time they get online, they deserve to get their computer compromised (and punched in the face for being stupid). IQ tests and/or basic computer test should be required before idiots should be allowed to buy a PC. This business of Microsoft creating bloated software that asks me every two seconds "Are you sure?" and "Are you really sure?", and then does what it wants anyway (or throws up a billion warnings) is nonsense. Stop trying to compensate for idiocy!

Ugg, now I'm all in a tizzy and need to go smoke.

Oh, and send me one of those girl/FF bundles please. That should help relax me.

Damn I wish I had purchased FF if she was bundled in, I got the freeware version. I do agree that firefox is superior, loads faster and has much better features for my uses. Built in spell check too, so my posts will be legible now!

Just need to install it on the home pc too...

Something tells me that the "premium bundle" would be more trouble than it's worth. I hear the bonus part only functions with a monthly upkeep fee of at least $1,000, and no returns or exchanges, and there's a 2 year minimum contract. I guess I'm happy with the freeware version after all...

BrianG: I had this problem on my girlfriends computer. She uses FF and it wouldn't let her open various items she needed for school. The items were .pdf, .doc, files. It wouldn't download them for some reason. I used the IE7 that came on her computer and had no problems. She's also experienced this while trying to open school PowerPoint notes.

Are these types of files bias toward IE and don't like FF? She never had a problem before with them and then this started happening.

That is probably a matter of going into preferences and allowing those items to be opened. This security measure actually makes sense for DOC and XLS files as malicious code could be embedded in a seemingly harmless document (usually via VBA or similar), even from a trusted source. But it makes no sense it would do that for PDFs.

Thats what I was thinking as well. I understand that the DOC and XLS files may be biased towards the IE but I couldnt understand why the PDF files we causing trouble as well.

She's just using IE7 now, problem free.

We had some trouble here with IE7 when it first came out, but all that was needed was to put out intranet IP address in the trusted sites list and loosen the restrictions for that zone. IE8 on the other hand is so secure it is almost crippling for any apps not used by the masses (Java, Flash, etc).

I just got a new laptop a month ago or so (last one died after 4 1/2 years). Its got Vista 64bit on it. All I can say its I hate the 64bit stuff. Many of my old programs no longer work. It really pisses me off cuz most of them were plenty good for the occasional use I gave them, and there is no way Im buying all of the new versions of them so I'm kinda screwed. I just bought a copy of XP pro to throw a dual boot on this thing. Probably wind up running the XP boot most of the time. Vista doesn't seem to give me any benefit.

Anyway... that was a bit of an off topic ramble. Sorry.

My actual point was, I was having problems with IE on this new machine. It would freeze up sometimes when it was trying to pop up open a new window and the only way to get back browsing again was to shut the whole IE program down and then go back in and try and find where you were. A few days ago I installed firefox and have not had any issues since. So another vote for firefox here.
