Losi 8ight brushless conversion - 04.30.2009, 11:24 PM

So here's the story....I bought a couple of Losi 8ight's on ebay last week to convert to brushless, and since i've never converted a buggy before i got the losi conversions.

here's the chassis I got from ebay:

I got it for 279.00!!! Two days later i saw another one from the same seller and bought another.

I figured getting the full Losi conversion would be my best bet because the company that produced the truck also made the conversion.... i thought they would have the best design. not true at all imo.....

let me just say for the most part, the losi conversion is good, but the motor mounts imo FREAKIN SUCK!!! they make it so you can only gear it to something like an 18 or 19t pinion with the 45t spur. i was WAYYY disappointed because i like doing speed runs.

here's the massive useless mount i got with the conversion:

mounted the way it is, it makes gearing options severely limiting. I sat there looking at it for an hour or so before i decided to basically hack the thing in half to open up some space. here's what the mount looked like now compared to the stock mount:

even after it was mounted, i could gear it up to a 24t pinion, but it just didn't seem like it was very stable anymore. The stock mount almost makes it seem like it angles my neu motor (or maybe it can't support the weight which makes it look like it's sagging in the rear)which i definately didn't like.

So i got on rc-monster and looked at mike's mounts and found his.

I bought one hoping it would be an improvement and it was in a BIG way. So I got another one express mailed to me with a bunch of big pinions. Not only did it fit better, it held the neu motor better and made it more stable. I could gear it through the roof now, and it was definately better for the neu motor. everything was rock solid. here's some pics of it done:

I gotta say thank you to Mike for making a great mount. it was the catalyst that made this conversion work. BTW......these buggies are FAST AS S#IT!!!
I geared it to 45/25 on 6S with ofna steel belted tires and let it rip.

I grinned from ear to ear and was hooked. This was the best investment i've made in 2 vehicles in a LONG time.

thanks for the kind words. i had to sell alot of stuff on ebay to buy those.
I still have 9 or 10 more auctions i gotta put up to pay for the 2 i just bought.

I've just never seen brand new rollers that cheap. i know it's not technically the 2.0-E version, but for that price...it was just too good to pass up...

Plus...they are so smooth to drive and on 6S...man are they FAST... in my opinion i think they would give my FLM 6S rustler a run for it's money.

you're exactly right....i was flat out shocked when i got to full throttle. i didn't think an 1/8 buggy could haul like a 6S rusty. it could.

the next day 2 of my FLM rustlers and 2 very modded rustlers all running MMM's between 4-6S went on ebay. there was just no comparison. i don't think i'll ever buy another 2wd again. getting traction with a neu strapped to a rustler was always such a Bit*H....the 8ight's did it effortlessly

I was in the same boat. had 2wds for 3 years. Even though my bl conversion will be VERY budget based, should be 10x funner then a Rustler.

Speaking of DwightSchrute, how great was that episode? Ah.... got to love the office.

Nice job on the conversions! And I agree, 1/8 buggies and truggies are a whole new world when stepping up from Rustlers and Revo's. I wish I would have spent the money on 1/8's in the beginning.... I learned a lot from the Emaxx, then Revo convert, and then the Rustler. But its a way better world to drive the buggy around the track!

thanks,man
what makes me laugh is how people are always talking about how hard they are to work on ....blah bhah blah .both of these buggies took less time than it would have me to build the ass end of a e-maxx.

^^ Definitiely!! They are much easier than E-Maxx's.

They look good tho, but hit the track and then report back!

Very nice. Good to see what the OFNA belted tires look like on a buggy.

I like em' too. They handle awsome. Still, i think i might need to glue beads around the walls where the tire meets the rim too.

the middle dosen't expand, but i can see the sides starting to flex under heavy throttle.
i might need to take some IC-2000 and just run a ring around where they meet on both sides.

i might try foams too.
