MRC/Academy SB Sport Pro 1/10 4WD Buggy - Going brushless, need a little help! -
05.01.2009, 02:30 AM
Ok, I was ordering a couple things on A-Main last night and saw that they had the MRC/Academy SB Sport Pro Carbon Limited Edition II kit (long name) on sale for $189, so I just had to buy one. I had already decided to buy a B44 soon for my new budgest brushless project, but as soon as I saw this thing at such a great price, I just had to buy it! It is a very nice buggy, with full carbon-fiber chassis, upper-deck, steering-plate, battery-strap & center driveshaft, billet aluminum motor-mount & chassis posts, front & rear ball-diffs, full CVDs, teflon-coated aluminum shocks, and lots of other great features.
Anyway, I bought a SuperSimple 50a ESC, a Turnigy 3900kV motor, and a Zippy Flightmax 2S 4000mAh 25C pack from HobbyCity (about $55 total), and this is the setup I am going to run in the SB.
I will have to wait until I get the kit so I can count the number of teeth on the pinions and spurs in the ball-diffs so that I can use the speed/gearing calculator, but I was hoping one of you might know where a good place to start would be? It comes with 3 main spur-gear sizes, one of them being 67t, but I don't know what the other 2 are...and it also comes with a 23t motor pinion, but I have many sizes.
I am not going to race, and I am not a speed freak, I just want a good bashing speed that is reliable and is capable of just enough speed to be exciting...any ideas? Thanks in advance!

You won't be able to use the ESC. If I'm not mistaken, its a plane ESC and won't work since there won't be any proportional brakes and it won't work with a pistol grip radio I do believe.

Well that sucks...no wonder it was only $12, heh!
Edit: At least I am going to build a large foamy plane pretty soon, so this will work well in that.
I guess I'll run my brand-new Dynamite Tazer 12T ESC and Reedy Krypton Kr 12T-single motor system that I have until I come up with another brushless setup. What do you guys think about the Novak Havoc Sport 8.5 system?

Scratch that, I think I am just going to run the Castle Creations Sidewinder/4600kV combo!

Why not just get the Ez-Run 80A and run that with the motor you have?

I could do that...wouldn't the 60a work, though, since the motor description says it only needs a 45a ESC?
I am not on a budget, I just wanted to do a budget BL system to see what could be done for as little as possible...heh!

The HW60 might work. I've got one in my 1/10 Touring car and so does a friend... but I'm not sure about running it in an off-road vehicle due to the extra stress.
The TC motor I'm running is the HW6000kv so I think as long as you don't over gear your setup the HW60 might just hold up... it'd be interesting.

the 80A would never fit in there...
the 60 would be more than enough. just keep an eye on the fan. if you have the option to get the MM get that though. no issues there!

Yea, I have been thinking...this car is really nice, almost as nice as the B44, so why cheap out on the BL system? I may just go ahead and run the MM/4600 combo on 2S and 3S and make it my personal basher.
Now I think I am going to choose another 1/10 4WD Buggy to do a budget BL system on...maybe a Tamiya Dark Impact?
But, there is still an unanswered question...what do you guys think I should do for gearing? I am leaning towards 18/67...sound ok?

I actually meant to say 60A and not 80A.
As far as not going the cheap route, the MM/4600 kinda is a cheap route. The CC motors typically run hot. You might be fine, but I don't know since I don't have any personal experience with them. I'd probably go with a Tekin setup, or if you really wanna do it right, a Lehner 1920 and a MM would be my choice.

I do love Tekin...I use FX-R ESCs and 55T motors in my rock-crawlers.
And [ this] is bad-ass!!!

$310 Might as well get an ESC for the motor he's got, then when it dies upgrade the motor. I bought my Neu 1506 off eBay for $100, then a week later I found a 1509 with a water-cooling jacket (which you could probably sell for $10-$20) for the same price, and Neu motors are awesome.
All I ever wanted was an honest weeks pay for an honest days work.

I got the kit today, and man everything looks nice...I have not opened any of the parts bags yet, but just looking through the plastic bags, everything looks very well made and the fit and finish looks excellent. I will build the kit tomorrow, maybe, or after I finish swapping in my new Vantage Racing extended carbon-fiber chassis on my brushless Revo 3.3!

If you need any tips for mods for the vehicle let me know. Ran these for awhile when the very first SB came into the country. A few mods off the top of my head that should work
- Associated B3 lunsford turnbuckles will complete the whole car
- AE shock springs can be used if you use lower AE style cups
- You can use a battery post to stiffen the chassis between the two decks
- If not included, the academy pistons teflon #3 and 4 work quite well to give a plush setup
- The chassis can take up to a 72T spur gear, maybe a 74. this will give you more gearing options.
- You can run a b4 diff spring instead of the stock unit and get better diff action
- don't use the kit tire foam, use losi buggy rear foam for the front and rear tires or better / harder foams
- don't use the included silicone grease. go with AE or equivalent quality grease
I would personally look and see if you can find a Kose motor mount for the car. The cam style mount was a real pain for gearing purposes. If you are at all handy, its not hard to machine one.
