Up in Flames - 05.23.2009, 09:03 AM

Was just out running my truggy on 2x 3s 4000mah zippy flight max lipos..

geared 13/52, truggy diff gears and the MMM 2200 combo.

All was well- temps the pass down my street before the eruption were 121 on motor, 101 on esc and 94 on the packs- not over drawing them in any way they are pretty decent packs

Then all of the sudden I hear hissing... thats odd, I bring the truck in and as soon as the truck stops one of the packs exploded- one of the cells completely blew apart. Now my entire truck is engulfed in flames. then I ripped both packs out of the truck and threw the flaming one to the side of the street.
Then the second cell blew- so trying to snuff the fire i buried the pack in much which extinguished the fire but now it was smokking like crazy really musty bright white smoke.. Chemistry has taught me alot- like lithium and water dont go well together so i ran inside and got the dry agent fire exitinguister and put the pack to rest... The other pack is perfectly fine- i mean pristine condition. cells were all at 3.81 when i brought them in, no heat in the packs. Luckily my Rx and MMM were all fine.

Here are the carnage pics

I'm guessing damage caused a hot spot - nice though.

Any pics of the truck?

Yes I looked on hobbycity, they can only deliver 80A continious. On the castle site they say that the motor pulls 120A continious max. Maybe those 80A are/were not enough?

Maybe I can help here...

Looking at the zippy build method they use alot of solder, and a pcb style end piece that all of the tabs are soldered onto. In places there may be less than 1mm between 2 of the solder pads. That and the overuse of solder may have been the issue. I am guessing the solder may have heated enough to melt and then bridged over causing a short.

Or like Chris said, a damaged area caused a hot spot. I suspect BB16 is rough on stuff

to bad, maybe the 80A continous wasn't enough for the MMM combo.
But i think it was a freak accident...

Ha. :)

I Dont think that the system overpowered the batteries.. i was just running with eovnu with 2 more of the same packs in tall grass. motor was hotttt, esc was pretty high up there too, and the packs were barely above ambient, then they ended up taking in 4400mah- i think these are a bit underrated
