Need some help from the pros! - 06.22.2009, 04:01 PM

Here's the plan, so hear me out and help me try to solve my problem.

I am going to be building a SCX10, rock racer/trail rig. I plan on using a XL-5 ESC and Titan 12t motor out of my Slash as the power plant.

The issue is that I want to put an interior in the Hi-Lift body and need to shrink the size of the spur gear to do it. If I drop down to a 24/54 or a 21/54 according to BrianG's calculator I can hit the speeds that I am looking for. (7-cell NiMh and 2.2 tires)

I want to know if I will blow up the motor by doing this as according to the calc, it will be running around 30k RPM, and I always get the overheating warning when I plug any values into the 540 brushed motor sizes under 35t.

So how do I resolve this. I want the best of both worlds and have seen successful builds using the Slash power plant. But due to the fact that I want a smaller spur and a little more speed, I have hit a wall and need some pointers.

Thanks for all the help in advance and wish me luck as I leave for Iraq in like soon, like real soon.

Can't help with those details, but the overheating warning is because the voltage and motor kv results in a max rpm that is higher than the max rpm specified for that motor. I didn't really know what to put there, so I used a baseline 15,000 rpm value, which probably isn't right.

Also, isn't the Slash Titan a 550 motor? That would make the kv lower than a similar turn 540 motor. I've run the Slash Titan on 10 cells before it died on me.

Honestly, before you go and rig a 550 sized motor mount up, DON'T! EVERY other crawler motor you will find is a 540. Honestly, find yourself an integy 45-55T lathe motor. They are basically "cheap junk" but for $20 you can't go wrong.

The issue with the 540 high turn count motors is the fact that they are slow. To quote Ricky Bobby "I wanna go fast." at least for a trail rig. I know that the 540 motors is not equal to a 550 motor, but I am limited to what I can get out of the speed calculator, at least some.

Basically I just want to know if I can run 24/54 without cooking the motor.
