question about shipping lipos.. -
07.06.2009, 09:29 AM
i've read that lipos aren't supposed to be left in cars, etc during the summer due to the heat.
can't they become dangerous if left is such heat?
i was thinking about selling some lipos and buying some more, but i'm concerned about the storage in shipping. how does it work in transit if most companies just use priority mail or first class mail?
do they classify it as hazardous materials?
any help is greatly appreciated.

Honestly, I make sure that there's no possible way for the leads to touch and short out. If its bare leads, I tape them up individually and then tape them to the pack. Then just package them in nicely.
I use priority flat rate boxes for just about everything. 2-3 days there and they always do fine. I'm sure linc will chime in here, he's shipping a ton of Lipo's around.

Check USPS, I know tower won't ship any air method due to regs (includes priority mail), but many others ship priority. As far as heat, if they stay below the max heat rating, about 140 for most, they should be alright.

I always crack the windows if I've left them in the car so it doesn't get too hot. I started trasnporting them in a liposack as well.
As far shipping. I've always shipped them priority. Teh ones I've bought have come priority. If we're supposed to be doing that, IDK.

MaxAmps ships in normal flat rate priority mail boxes. If it's against postal regulations maybe the federal government will shut down MaxAmps!

Well, the PO does have a little sign that says shipping lithium batteries is a no-no...
That said I have shipped close to 200 packs now, all via usps and never had an issue. As long as the packs are in good shape they can handle heat. My packs live in a metal toolbox, and it routinely gets 100+ in there.

I've noticed that sign as well. And they ask you if you're shipping anything hazardous. I've told them I was shipping a battery before and they asked if there was any possibility of the leads touching or shorting out. I had the leads heat shrinked and tapped to the battery. Other than that they didn't say much.
