MBX5T or Hyper ST - 06.28.2009, 02:32 AM

Hi all,

I have both of the above truggies. I would like to convert one to brushless. Alot of my mates already have the ST brushless so to be different Im leaning towards the Mugen.

I will probably use something like a Medusa moror and MMM speedie however the question I have is about conversion kits.

I see that Tekno has the Mugen kit, however I really dont want a new chassis etc etc, are there any other kits available?

Any more information would be great thanks Shaun.

mike's shop - 06.28.2009, 05:40 AM

hey,

in monstmike's shop you find a motor mount for mugen. further you need a battery tray, I think he's got one, like that U have the basics.

and the rest is not that difficult, find a place for the esc (I have mine on the steering servo to keep the weight towards the front). You don't really need a conversion kit, you can do it like that. mike has the neu lipos, which are supposed to be good & not too expensive (your one-stop-shop ).

a mugen is a good idea I think, its quality should be good enought to handle the power (tranny).

http://www.rc-monster.com/rcm.php

for the mount, it's on the bottom. Reg. the tray, search the shop, at least losi has one; i have made it all myself, so I 'm not an expert for the tray. where do you live? in germany jamara has now a batt tray.

or you build it by yourself. there are many possiblilities, from cnc-drilled, to epoxy to thick lexan (which is a thermoplastic, like that easy to do), or even wooden ones. I have read about kydex, which seems to be ideal for that use (thermoplastic). to mount it you need some screws and some velcro. mike has some specific ones for that use, too (I think).

of course you could make a motor mount by your self, depending on your motivation and talent. mike#s mount has at least a lot of "bling-factor". mine has NO bling-factor, but works excellent. important thing is, it has to be stiff and solid.

Either will work very well - I've converted an MBX5T but ended up selling and getting a Hyper St Pro - I now run two brushless Hyper ST Pro. Best do these conversions once - buy the RCM motor mount, pinion and battery tray... Saves you hassle in the long run.

so, you sold your mugen for the hyper st?

which truggy do you prefer between the two as far as drivetrain strength and durability go?

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

I personally would go for a Hyper ST. The MBX5T is going to become harder and harder to find parts for since the MBX6T came out.

1. mugen parts will be available for a long time
2. mugen is much more reliable - never broke a single mugen part (except once when I was hit by WOT truggy but that was not standard situation and other trucks would end up as pile of rubble)
3. mugen is lighter
4. mugen handles better
5. mugen has better aftermarket support

my finished mugen has RCM motor mount and battery tray and of course slipperential.
with 1mm offset mugen buggy hexes handles like a dream.

the body is metalic white, just a phone camera and too much light :)

My vote is also for Mugen...I have a mbx-5 buggy and it is almost bomb proof...I know because I have pushed it really hard and it came out smiling!

nice!!!!

how's the tekin set?

I would put the esc on the steering servo to get the center of gravity as low as possible.

hobao has great stuff, very solid (have a converted hyper7). but I can't imagine that you wont get parts for a mugen, it's just a great brand. even old, used mbx4 get sold on ebay pretty expensive, here in germany (one wantet to get one). these buggies are just great I guess.

Either one is good. The hyper is a great truck, very tough (broke 1st real part, a arm, after a year of use this week) and priced very nice.

It drives very well, steers awesome but is pretty stout. Really depends on what kind of things you want the trug for. Serious racing, I may go w/ the Mugen, but some racing and some bashing the Hyper is hard to beat (esp w. such cheap parts compared to the Mugen.)

Trugs are simple to convert. One RCM mount, one batt box (bought or made) and you are done. Mount the elecs and let it rip.

From reading people's reviews, I think either truck would be a good choice. Both are seriously tough and great bashers, as well as being super track worthy. Your choice.

My vote is for the mugen. Why? Because I converted one and it is AMAZING!! Handles like a dream. I used Mike's motor mount, and 2 novak battery trays to keep my 2s' low on the chassis. Paired with and RX8 and T8 combo....

Just convert both, so you don't have to make decision!

If not, convert the Hyper ST. Other than some gearing limitation (I can't use a pinion smaller than 13T on mine), it'll convert well, and run well once completed.

Here's mine:

thanks guys. My mates run a single 4 or 5 cell lipo. Is it better to have 2 x 2 cells??
