Hyper Mini STe Electric 1/12 Truggy - 04.15.2009, 08:13 PM

Well my new mini truggy shipped this afternoon from nitrohouse.. now the fun begins..

Problems? Lack of detail to calculate top speeds..
  • From my understanding the diff gears are 10t and 22t (2.2 ratio)
  • From my understanding the spur is 40t mod1
  • No tranny - direct drive on center diff
  • Tires ? 3.5" would be my best guess

Please post detail if you have more or if you know for sure!

Battery Tray Specs (should be pretty accurate)
  • 5.75" long (146mm)
  • 1.4375" wide (36.5mm)

My plans.. No major mods, this baby is stacked from the get go and for 199 it's a deal iMO. No junk electronics to sell off either :)

Electronics- Lucky for me I had all these sitting around other than the Rx
  • MM esc - no mods (auto lipo)
  • Velineon 3500kv brushless motor
  • Spektrum SR3500 (finally get to use the dx3.0 thats been sitting in the corner since I got my dx3r)
  • Hitec servo (sorry forget model #) 180 torque though more than enough

From the salesman (Tim) I spoke to most people are running 540 motors (not 380s) and typical setup there is an mm6900. I think the velineon is a ton better of a motor than those castles, as it stays a ton cooler geared at the same speeds. I'm only looking for 40-45mph so if my calculations are correct the included 14t pinion should be perfect (42.9). I'm a little skeptical on these calculations though but w/ a 3s on the velineon I'm getting 64mph using BrianG's calc page with the above figures. That is a bit insane and not what I'm looking for as I will be on the race track all the time. I did order a 16t pinion when I got it as Tim said everyone was running the stock pinion on a 6900 MM system on 2s considering the kv different btw the 6900 and my 3500 I thought it would be needed... but maybe not?

Again please post if you have more detail and I will update when I get the truck in a few days!! YAY! I'm so glad I saw this truck before I bought one of those new traxxas mini e-revo's. Those are pretty sweet lil trucks too but this Mini Hyper STe smokes it.

A few notes on tweaks..

Diff fluids 1 rear, 3 center, 3front is what most are using (I plan on 1, 5, 3 at first but who knows)
Springs - Losi 10th scale fit (yellow seem to be the best)

I was just looking on nitrohouse's site and the tooth count may not have been what I was given, if anyone is positive please post...

I'm thinking she gave me the wrong figures and it should have been a 40t and 10t or a (4:1) This makes things fit better but again I cannot confirm this (yet).

I maybe forced to run 3s or swap out motors for something w/ a higher KV rating or she will be poking along.. I think I am limited w/ my gearing options w/ this velineon at 3500 I would only be 27mph with the 16t pinion and it doesn't seem like there is room for a large 24t beast in there :P In fact they only supply 11-16t for a range, not that you couldn't squeek something else by though.

Well for now it seems I'm talking to myself.. LOL

But I talked to the guy at the shop today and he checked a few things... provided he can count :)

Spur gear is actually 41t
Diff drive/pinion are 39/10 3.9 ratio

That's it for now...

I do not have a .5 class truck, but from what i have seen, the MM motors seem to heat up in them. The 3500kv VXL seems to work great, Though most here like the 1506 neu's or 50mm medusa's around 3300kv

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

What voltage to they run at? 2s lipo w/ a 3300 motor wouldn't even be able to break 35mph from my calculations (not being 100% on the ratios) I could be off but not by much... Good to know about the MM's though, I guess thinking back my 1/10 rusty would even overheat w/ the 5700 so I'll steer clear of that mess. I really want to use my Velineon motor as I know it can do the job, I'm just worried about top end, specifically lack there of. I guess I can get it try it and GPS to confirm the speed calculator then start looking for pinions and if I can't fit the 24t pinion I calculate I need to hit 45mph I will maybe get one of those new MeduSA 50mm motors 5900kv rated.

With the 3300 on 2s you need around an 18t pinion and 2.8 or 30's tires... The 3300 allows you to go up to 3 or even 4s...

I run this setup on 2 cars and it works fine however if you are strictly 2s then you should consider getting the 4800kv...

Much better to go for a medusa 50mm v2 as it has a 5mm shaft - the vxl and MM are 1/8th can snap under stress.

I ran my velineon solo in my erevo for a short time.. that shaft isn't likely to "snap" with a little mini truggy :) I kept it geared for about 38 in the erevo, but that was on 4s lipo. I will only be running 2s 5k lipo hard shell race packs (typical restraint for most normal race tracks). I just wasn't sure if I could get the gearing high enough due to the size and mount to make my velineon hit 40ish in it. I have a 16t that fits and is mod 1, but funny enough anything bigger all requires the reducer as they are all 5mm bore pinions. Lots of those available though again 24t is the tallest I would want if my calculations are correct.

The E-revo has a slipper which reduces shock on the motor shaft the CRT.5 is direct drive.

I'm talking from experience - I've converted 4 CRT .5 and have snapped a shaft on a Feigao L with one - Feigao also make the VXL motor which is M length. If you have it you might as well run it but it wouldn't be my choice to buy.

In terms of gearing 18T, 2s, 3500kv and 3.8/30's should be fine for track...

Differential Ratio: 3.25
Transmission Ratio: 1
Other Ratio: 1
Spur Tooth Count: 46
Pinion Tooth Count: 18
Total Voltage: 7.4
Motor KV: 3500
Tire Diameter (inches): 3.93
Tire Ballooning (inches): 0
Motor Current Draw: 0
Motor coil Ω: 0
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 2.56 : 1
Total Ratio: 8.30556 : 1
Tire Circumference (inches): 12.35 inches (313.6 mm)
Total Motor Speed: 25900 RPM
Vehicle Speed: 36.46 mph (58.57 km/h)
Effective KV Value: 3500
KT constant: 0.39 oz-in/A

I snapped a 1/8" shaft on a simple feigao S motor on 3S. The DD is quite hard on the motor shaft.
The VXLs aren't great motors either. A medusa 5mm is a much wiser option. I have a 2200 kv on 4S and its plenty plenty fast. I've raced with Chris's .5 above (one of them at least lol) and both are great and close in power. The small wheelbases on the mini's make them a bit of a handful if they get too high powered. I turn mine down a lot even at that do avoid all the flips and wheelies so much. Still does nearly 50 w/ a 16T pinion iirc. The medusa's like to be geared fairly low and load up before they really wake up in my experience.

The vxl motor has a shorter magnet and windings than a S can feigao... So technically it is an XS motor... Similar power output though.

You guys suck.. I really didn't need to spend more money.. but you twisted my arm. I ordered the Medusa 36/50/4800kv -5mm to toss in it. I was all set to use a MM as well, but I may just toss in my spare MMM and use the MM w/ the velineon for another project or sell it as a combo.

Blah!

Should be ball park 43mph.. we shall see, that is using the diff ratio from a crt .5 which I don't think is the same..... in which case I'll just move from a 14t to a 16t to make up the difference. Going to try to keep this beast on 2s 5k hard shell race packs. I guess competition will tell if I end up on 3s lipo w/ different gearing.. we shall see.

With 2 the MM will be fine on that motor. The MMM may be difficult to fit on the smaller chassis...

The MMM is pretty massive for the little chassis. A SW is a good option too.

Arct1k: I think your mod powers have gone to your head! I did mean 5mm in my post, meaning 5mm shaft lol. Should say 50mm/5mm I guess

Help, help! I'm being oppressed!

The 4800 on 2S should be great, its more rpms than I run w/ my 2200 on 4S, and it runs upper 40s easy, and great runtimes on a 2100mah pack.
