Newb considering a BL/Lipo 8T conversion -
10.06.2009, 06:51 PM
Hi All,
Been reading and doing some research with a view to having a go with BL/Lipo with my Losi 8T. The nirvana I'm looking for is to simply be able to keep up with most of the similar Nitro truggies when racing and achieve a 20 minute runtime.
After a bit of research and some recommendations then I'm thinking of:
MMM ESC
MMM 2200KV Motor
Hyperion 4S 6500MAH Lipo
Any thoughts on the above guys? I'm a little concerned about the posts about these things puffing and blowing up though! Thought that nitro could be fickle!! Also, is the above a bit OTT for what want to achieve and would a milder ESC/Motor get the performance I want and make it easier to achieve the runtime?
The above list omits the subject of conversion hardware, been looking at the Losi, RCM and Tekno propositions for this. Been recommended the Losi kit and it's clear the RCM kit is well thought of....but the idea of the Tekno kit allowing for mechanical brakes and a clutch or RCM Slipperential with my simple understanding seems to make sense.
To my limited understanding then surely these items would lift a lot of the stress and strain from the ESC/Motor and hopefully mean it doesn't go up in smoke?
Be interested to know your thoughts guys as clearly you know your stuff in this area!!
Cheers! Beanie

my take: thats all you need bro. CC 2200 KV a 6500 should last you 20 min. my 5000 does if im not balls to the wall. Use Brian Gs calc, a 14-15 tooth pinion-ish.. I had the Tekno. IMO only its crap, The mech. brakes blow and even their racers changed to direct drive long shank pinions which blow too. LOL (bet I get yelled at)... Losi turd also, get RCM Mikes 8 adapter and one of his or one as nice battery tray. If you check my posts I have an 8T thats pretty sick, mikes motor mount is the key, the slipperential would be so nice and a motor saver but I broke the budget. What you picked out is good you will smoke nitro.... I like running the 2200 on 5s though =D

Really appreciate the advice JayJay, I read your build thread, looks very nice! Sounds like I didn't ought to worry about Tekno kit/mechnical brakes/clutch then....although the slipperential thing sounds like it might be prudent...or again am I just worrying too much
Understand the slipperential, but what is a motor saver?
Thanks again...

Sorry, another question, the Hyperion lipo apparently can be charged at '5C'
What does this mean?
I'm going to get a Imax B6AC charger/balancer, are they OK?

Sounds like a great setup to me, should work just fine, just fine at whooping nitros that is.
5C means you can charge it at 5x the capacity in Ah... so 6.5Ah (6500mah) x 5 = 32 amps. However, no charger yet can do this, the Hyperion 720i can charge that pack at 15 amps though, which is 2.3C, less than half of 5C.
Have you considered going with a 6s lipo setup and a 1500kv. Tekin truggy motor? You would need a 6s/4200mah pack, which I personally use.

Thanks for the advice, gratefully received!
So how quick would the 6500mah Hyperion pack charge using their 720i charger at 15 amps? Would this be detremental to the lipo at all?
Tekin and 6S; I was wondering if 4S might be more than enough for me right now and the MMM kit seems to have a fairly good following....why would you recommend the Tekin and the 6S over say the MMM/2200kv/4S 6500mah set-up? What's the benefits do you think?
Cheers

the lower KV and higher voltage run cooler and tend to have longer runtimes. for a start the cc2200 and lipo you picked will smoke any nitro. you can always throw in 5s or 6s for uncontrollable fun

Hmm....so maybe team the MMM ESC (or maybe EZrun 150A?) with perhaps a different motor with lower KV and use a 4S pack (Start with 4S and go from there?), and that would lead to longer runtimes you think and better durability and less chance of a dead lipo/ESC/Motor?
Budget is a consideration so can you recommend a cheaper but still reliable sub 2000kv motor that would suit and maybe a cheaper ESC/Lipo's? I don't necessarily have to have a setup that blows the nitro's into the weeds, just one that definitely keeps up and hits a 20 minute runtime? I'm open to suggestions!

in my personal opinion or IMPO as you texters say, I would grab the castle 2200 MMM system on that 4s lipo, anything else may be a let down. The hobby wing 150 works for some but its turd. Patrick (CC CEO)posts here all the time and backs his stuff up. and its no rip off price like an mgm. If you want fast. good runtime and support when you mess up go with your 1st gut instinct. it was dead on right

Hmm...might be able to get the best of both worlds, just read the thread about a 1500kv motor to be launched by CC.....might be worth waiting to get a MMM ESC with a Castle 1717 perhaps? Still with Hyperion 4S 6500mah....
Worth waiting for, or will the 2200kv be more than capable of what I want? I guess the power will be fine with the 2200kv for my needs, but would the 1717 1500kv be more likely to get longer runtimes with the 4S 6500mah?

the 1717 as I understand it is a big ole' motor way more than the 8T needs. the 1515 CC 2200 kv throws it around like a rag doll

If that's the case, any advantage/disadvantage to using the 2650 in the 8T rather than the 2200 maybe?

2650 is a 1512 a slightly smaller can better suited for a buggy

So what would the difference likely be between using a 2200 or a 2650 in the 8T?
