Things to know about E-Revo's. - 10.27.2009, 03:40 AM

G'day,

I am about to buy a standard brushed E-Revo for my brother for christmas and would like to know the things to know about these.

I am not completely new to the hobby, I got into it in January this year after buying a Losi Desert Truck, which I still have.

So, I would like to know the weak point's of the E-Revo's, what will go first (I know the titan motors won't last long), what will need replacing soon, what will make it better?

I am buying it used, but it has only been used 6 times on a soccer field, and I believe it, from the pictures I have seen, it is reasonably clean with only a couple of scratches and the tyres look like they still have all the forward bite.

Also, is there any way to make it run on 2s2p, using a longer can 3000 kv motor or so maybe?
A while ago my brother was looking at E-Maxx's and E-Savage's, one of the things he didn't really like was the dual motor and dual battery setups, not a major thing, but he would've preferred a single setup, but if a couple of batts could be ran in parallel, the extra runtime would be good.

Any help/replies would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I run 2s2p as trainer mode for my son with a castle 2200. Reality is with a big car like this you need 4s.

Weakest thing for me on a revo with brushless was the diffs and sliders.

Brushed that stuff will last no problem and elecs will be weakest.

Best of luck

ps I should have said servo / radio too. Best convert to a single servo and a 2.4 radio

if you want it to stay waterproof after you kill the titans and also want brushless power (but not quite the same)
google "kershaw designs"

they have a large single motor kit that will poop all over the titans and you can use only one of their motors if you want.

the biggest weak point of stock e-revo would have to be the rear toe links!!
go for an RPM true track system.

the E-maxx and E-savage both are proper "trucks" they roll over all the time, have 8 shocks and look cool. but the E-maxx has weak bulkheads and the E-savage has a weak transmission. the savage flux has the tranny fixed but the brushless E-maxx about to hit the shelves does not have anything fixed

if you want waterproofness to hang around then go for some 7 cell large nimh packs.
the stock ESC is fine with them and they get pretty good speed on the kershaw 970 motor. (make sure you break in the motor as it is brushed)

but WHEN you upgrade to brushless, expect for get some good quality lipo's while you are going as the rule goes, never run nimh in big brushless trucks (4s 5000mah 20c and above usually)

beware of the 2nd hand bit...it might look nice in the pics, ive done that before too! in that 6 times the titans could be dead. he may have jumped it and pulled off a suspension rod end, this can be screwed back into place but severely weakens it so next time you jump it they pull out a lot easier!

as for the tyres looking good....get used to that, stock E-revo tyres NEVER EVER EVER EVER WARE OUT!!!! they grip about as good as a possum on water too. they actually grip a little bit better if you do a burnout with them (but that is not recomended as it is super hard on your system)

that should get the ball rolling, the rest should flood in, expect a post from mrcrash soon

btw are you from aussie?

I reckon he would go for a 2.4ghz radio pretty quick, he has use mine with the 2.4 and 29mhz and hates the long flexible aerial.

I looked at the kershaw website ages ago... I forgot about it.
The daul 700 setup looks good.
I can't find the 970 motor on there and it looks like the 970 combo has been discontinued.

That reminded me too, the other thing he wasn't exactly a fan of with the more true-er monster trucks is the stability and handling, he didn't really like the idea of something tipping over constantly... although I suppose a some awesomness would cure that haha.

The LHS warned me brother about the Emaxx and the bulkheads, saying just about everyone who walks in and is after an Emaxx part is most likely after a bulkhead.

He nearly got an E-savage, but I think he just wanted a bit more for the money, with the low stability, smaller size and not as durable.

The Revo comes with 2x 7cell 4200mah nimh batteries (venom though ) but should be alright for a while I figure.

I have brushless in my Losi Desert Truck, and have a couple of turnigy 2s 5000mah 20 lipos.
I don't reckon he would be all out for speed or anything so would only be after a mild brushless setup I reckon (probably the turnigy/hobbywing 150a combo from hobbycity).

I just sent a message to the bloke asking for any hints of damage or anything that will need looking at.
I am hoping it is still all good, although I only have his word to go by.

Thanks for the tip on the tyres, I thought they were a bit better than that.
I am seeing a similar thing with my stock tyres on my Desert Truck, the more they get worn down and the odd burn-out during a run makes them a lot better than when they were new, although I only use them on concrete.

Yeah mate, I am an Aussie, down in Tas.

Cheers for the replies fellas.

EDIT:
Never mind, I just got a message back from the seller saying he wont/can't send post it... back to square one...

you are in tas??
no way!! i am too
we should meet up sometime
or even better...come down to the club and race

as for a 2.4 ghz radio, spektrum just released their DX3E which is a cheap-as-chips radio, 3 channel so you have something to play with and it's simple to use.
also it is compadible with DSM 2 so you cant get the wrong reciver

gear low of the venoms, they are ok as long as you dont pull heavy amps from them.
as for brushless in the revo, get the MMM and save yourself the hastle.
they are easy to use and are anywhere from mild to wild with a simple plug into the computer.

run 4s on the mmm 2200kv combo and you will be fine

as for buying one...the australian dollar ROCKS at the moment!!
90% of us racers at the club import from america, go to www.amainhobbies.com

order from there and keep your total order under $1000 (some of us find it easy to go over lol) to clear customs w/o 10% duty.

take care,
shaun

Hey mate, sorry for not getting back to ya, kinda forgot about this thread after the deal for the revo fell through

Sweet, I am down south in Hobart though, I am assuming you are up north and are talking about the NWRCCC club/track?
We could really do with a half decent track down here.

Yeah, the DX3E should be a nice radio, I reckon Horizon/Losi should put that with all their RTR's, would be far better, not to mention it would probably give them even more sales.

Ended up getting my bro a HPI E-Firestorm Flux, Castle link and 2x 2s 5000mah 20c turnigy lipos.
Came in at about $430-$440 I think it was.
While no revo or anything like that but I figure he would still go ecstatic over that.

Cheers.
