Question LVC questions - 03.18.2006, 06:06 PM

With LVC devices like the Li-saver that auto detect the no. of cells,do they simply set the cut-off voltage as a percentage of the plug in voltage?

What i want to know is with the Li-saver can i discharge a pack to 1/2 capacity, then unplug and plug back in and still have it cut-off at 3 volts per cell?Or could it detect a 1/2 discharged 8 cell pack as a 7 cell pack and allow it to overdischarge?

If that would be a problem, does anyone know of any good programmable external LVC where the plug in voltage wouldn't matter?

i dont think that would be as problem since some people dont charge lipos all the way.

Usually they detect the actual number of cells in a pack. I know the Dimension Engineering LVC has a little LED that flashes the number of cells it detects.

If you use a lot of cells, there can be voltage overlap where a half-charged 8s could be detected as a fully charged 7s (for example). If you can find a LVC that you manually set the number of cells on, then there wouldn't be anything to worry about.

That would kind of suck. What if you run different cell counts? Run an 8s and then go 6s and not be able to play.

An auto-detect should stay fixed on the number of cells while the battery is plugged in. A manual cell-count version should stay fixed onto the number of cells until the user decides to change it, but that would depend on the model of LVC. Then there are LVCs that are only made for one cell count (like 3s).

Yes i think so, but i was thinking if i have to stop to work on the car half way through a run,i'd have to leave it plugged in or risk have it detect 7 cells instead of 8.

The Liposhield would be a solution, anyone tried this in a car?The type of cutoff(soft cut off, resets when you throttle back to zero then throttle up again) could possibly kick in then quickly reset without realising? (since you're constantly going through neutral)

I'll give the liposhield a go.

Anyone seen any manual set LVCs?

Hi,

I have a few manual set LVCs using mini switches. They're German product called ERS or something. Mr. Constructor sold me those & they can handle up to 6S lipo.
