Today's Poll: Keep RCM RC8T or create Beefy MT - 03.14.2010, 01:42 PM

I just want to run an idea across you guys since I think RCM has the coolest projects and great peeps with limitless ideas and imaginations. Here's one of my many ideas that I think I want to make happen:

Back when I had a MGT 8.0, I wanted to put 24mm adapters on it and run Baja 5B rear wheels on all four corners. I thought it would be SICK since it had the .50 engine and could handle the extra weight. Fast forward to now, I have a RCM RC8T which is very fast on 4s and crazy on 5s. I can pull wheelies on our straight here at the track, but it's like throwing a dirtbike on a 1/8 scale RC car track, just doesn't fit. I'm the only truggy there and sometimes I can keep up, sometimes I can't, since I'm so big. When I race in Texas, it's a lot of fun but don't get down there often enough to justify keeping it.

So, I want to pull the RX8/1700kv T8 combo out of the RCM RC8T, sell it as a roller, buy a Savage or E-Savage used, and toss all my electronics in it. I'd add some Savage XL TVPs and some other beefy stuff to keep the drivetrain in one piece. Then add the 24mm adapters and some Baja 5B wheels and tires. Run it on 5s or 6s and have a BLAST. I was tossing around the idea of a 5B but I know I'll want 4wd and the idea of 22V throwing mud and rocks with those huge wheels and tires makes me giddy

What do you guys think? I think I'd have to swap the 1700kv T8 for a 1521 to help turn the big lugs and on 6s the 1700kv might have trouble keeping the RPMs in the safe zone.

Oh, and this entire build would be in a stealth/flat black theme.

Do it....Can I also suggest looking at the Losi LST's, Muggy, and possibly an MGT???? I can't say which of the 4 I prefer at this point, but they are all in the same "big" bad ass class.....

You should come out to Pacific Beach @ Labor Day and run with us in the sand.

Losi 8T 1.0, Savage Flux - XL style, LST XXL, Muggy, 3.3 E-Revo Conversion and sitting outside 425hp, 831 Tq Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel. It SMOKES

if i were you id keep the RC8T,the savage with baja 5B wheels on all 4 is going to be monstrously heavy cause 5B wheels are every bit 2-3 times the weight of 1/8 MT wheels,so id see lots of drivetrain components getting trashed (diffs, axles, bearings, etc) not to mention the extra stress on the suspension and shocks,i've seen savage shocks bust apart with standard wheels hitting a curb at 50+ mph,i cant imagine what 5B wheels would do.

so now that i said that,do you plan on racing MT's or do you just want to bash? i hope your not looking for a very stable platform, cause the XL WILL flip, probably alot, as the RC8T is much more planted. the savage will also need some mods to make it as durable as an RC8T,im not saying its cheap by any means, but it is a slightly lower quality RC needing some extras for heavy bashing.and you will have to swap motors, set everything up the way you like (center diff, battery trays, etc).this is just my .02,bu id keep the RC8T.--josh

Where is that exactly? I'm down in Lacey and go to school in Tacoma, so it's possible. Did you mean some other holiday other than Labor Day? That's a loooong ways away and I will probably be down in FL at that time.

MGTs aren't as strong as a Savage, IMO. MGTs are better handling and a better platform for performance, but not durability. I don't like Losi's designs at all, and their hardware hex sizes make no sense.

I want to use LST shocks and this would be just a basher. It will be for fun when I'm out with the Jeep and camping, stuff like that. I plan to do a lot of that this summer, as much as I can actually. It would really fun to take a huge MT with me and have some 22V fun

Oh, and anything breaks at 50+. I've broken a few 1/8 scale arms at slower speeds by just hitting one wheel on a solid object. I've heard the Savage is very strong and I think the bearings will be fine as long as I don't sky it too much. Break it, build it stronger, repeat.

Why have a center diff in a Savage? Solid center spool if I can get it in there without the transmission. That's what I'd like anyway.

Looks like linc is doing a very similar project, but I'm not sure if he's going to use 24mm hubs and run the Baja wheels and tires.

I just need to find a Savage roller for cheap and I could start this, hah.

Pacific Beach is 20 miles north of Ocean Shores. Labor Day end August.
