Question MMM Heat Question - 03.31.2010, 03:37 PM

Hey guys, was running my Kyosho 777 today, it is geared 13/46 with a NEU 1512 2.5D 2050kv on 5S 20-30c Turnigy. I was doing ~10 quick laps on a very small track, never giving it the beans.

Today's temp was around 60F.

Motor temp 120F
MMM V3 ESC 120F at the fan in the middle of the run
150F at the end of the run

Batts where around 70 tops.

Is the reason the car is under geared why the ESC was this hot? The ESC fan also did not turn on at all. Is there a way to test if the fan works? Physically the ESC is in great shape, today was the only time the ESC has been this hot.

I'm using a Raytek MT-4 to check the temps.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Mike.

fan always runs when you first turn on so you know if it works :)

I cleaned out the fan a little, and it started working again. I'm going to order a few...

But just to make sure the size of the fan I need is 30mmX30mmX7mm?

i have a dead fan in mine too. will any normal 30x30x7 fan work?

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

No (fan issue has been covered extensively- hit the search feature for info ). The fan uses a special plug so you'll need to do some soldering to swap it over with the plug on the broken fan. I think the fan is 25mm square vs 30mm, but like I said, check the castle section a bit more for better info.

Over gearing heats up the esc, rather than undergearing.

Yep you are right, going to get a new spur, the mesh right now is really loose with the 13 and the motor is as close as it could be.

Measured the fan case and it is 30x30x7, the fan itself is a 25mm computer fan.

I will be connecting the new fan straight to the receiver to cool at all times, hopefully the extra cooling and diff gearing will help my problems.

A 1512 neu motor is maybe not enough powerfull for heavy buggy as mp777 (1200W), then maybe its running not as efficient as it can. 13/46 is a normal setup with 1515 1Y 2200kV motor (1500W) so you are not undergeared but maybe a little overgeared for your track.

That may be just too much motor for my buggy.

I would go with the castle 1.5y if i was running 4s...

The motor would be physically way too big for my buggy lol, the 1515 barely fits.
