RC8T -Enough is Enough?? - 07.23.2010, 12:39 PM

After a month of bashing (Without too much strain on the chassis) This is the result ....

Does that seem normal?
I abused my Losi8t and nothing happened to her ...

Looks like you've lived up to your name... PAIN!

Normal? Not really. Possible? Very much so. Landing in the wrong fashion at a high rate of speed or tall height...

That's rather odd. I've seen/had bent chassis, but never such a break. It doesn't even look like it bent at all before it broke. I would suspect something wrong with the metal itself (almost looks like "pot metal").

i've seen one other rc8te with the chassis broken just like that. i'm pretty sure the guy hit a sidewalk though...

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

I agree w/Brian. When I weld AL, once in a while I run into a soft spot and the AL will not hold a weld as well. The only time aluminum breaks like that is a " soft spot " or a weak spot. Aluminum should bend first then break if stressed in the same area more than once

sorry to disappoint you but no sidewalks, just pure soft sand in miles
the chassis as a very thin part in the rear like a bottle neck.
the first thing i ask my self wane i purchase the car "is this strong enough?"
probably not
So I'm going to send mail to AE hope they replace it .

Normally it would bend first, but I'll bet the chassis was hardened and/or hard anodized which makes it very brittle afa aluminum goes. So in that case it only takes one HARD landing to break it. Though, it would need to be a very hard landing.....like landing wing first after a triple.

P.S. - You might want to check your motor-mount, too.

I have an RC-Monster Chassis on my RC8T. Mine has sustained MANY bad landings and crashes through almost two years of racing. I am starting to get some cracks running forward in that area, not across like yours. But I know how my cracks started and it was from losing the screw that holds the chassis brace to the chassis!

Mine was the same. Started to tear, then bent the brace, then broke the chassis.

Like evereyone is saying, looks odd to crack straight across without fatiguing first.

On the AE forums there are a few broken chassis. The best idea is that the chassis being as hard as it is plus all the milling makes the rear a little vulnerable. Some guys are going to the heavier (albeit less milling and a little more flexible) non FT chassis for bashing.--Josh

The photos don't show the crack in detail however it looks to have failed suddenly (unlike pinkpanda3310's mangled mess) because it's 'bright'

IIRC the chassis is 3mm 7075? Assuming the chassis material is in fact 7075 of consistant quality, here's a theory or 2...hard anodising 7075 in black can have mixed results & this can be a simple as mixed grades in the anodising bath...this may result in the 7075 parts being stripped & reanodised, which would typically produce a product that is thinner than original

Or the harmonic resonance may have been matched exactly through vibration from the drivetrain & amplified through the long 'tongue' at the same time as impact...resulting in the failure

Or the 7075 has been tempered & is stretching past it's capacity (I've often thought the RC8T chassis 'tongue' was suspect at this point just going on how it looks) which results in failure

I think first or second are more likely...assuming the material is correctly labelled & manufactured
