Castle 1717 in the LST - 12.15.2009, 06:05 PM

Ok so after I turned the shaft to 5mm I figured I would give it a try in the LST with the TDR mount. My TDR mount is setup for m3 thread screws with a 25mm spacing, the 1717 uses m4 screws with a 25mm spacing. I have a RCM neu front cover that I modded a while back to accept m4 countersunk screws to bolt onto the motor. It hasm3 threads spaced 25mm apart so I used some short m3 countersunk screws to mount it to the TDR plate, after I mounted the 1717.

I need to get another TDR mount, so I will have "the dude" drill and countersink the front plate for m4 size screws. Turns out my new 1521 1y also has m4 threads, so maybe I will have him make me 2 of those plates...

Anyways, here are some pics. The spur is a 59t, and the 25t pinion will not mesh quite close enough. This is not due to lack of adjustment in the mount, the 1717 contact with the tranny "foot". I can cut the "foot" down about 1/8" and re-drill the hole in it and in the chassis to gain the necessary clearance. However a 63t (stock lst 2nd gear) spur should work fine without any mods to the tranny.

Pic time!

Here is the speed calc result. 42mph is not too bad, wish I had some larger pinions... Guess i could mod the tranny and use the 59t spur. That would get me around 45mph. Or use the xxl tranny internals...

Differential Ratio: 3.3076923076923075
Transmission Ratio: 1.9130434782608696
Spur Tooth Count: 63
Pinion Tooth Count: 25
Total Voltage: 22.2
Motor KV: 1577
Tire Diameter (inches): 6.5
Tire Ballooning (inches): 0
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 2.52 : 1
Total Ratio: 15.94595 : 1
Tire Circumference (inches): 20.42 inches (518.68 mm)
Rollout: 1.28:1
Total Motor Speed: 35009.4 RPM
Vehicle Speed: 42.46 mph (68.2 km/h)

You sure that's gonna be enough motor?

Haha if your spur ever locked up I think that motor would just spit the whole trans off!

Looks trick, I REALLY think Castle should offer a step shaft.

I'll be praying for your entire driveline....

OMFG, That 1717 dwarfs the tranny !
Anxious to hear feedback after you drive it, should be SICK.

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.

It is a big motor. Fits well on the tdr mount. I have a feeling geared for low 40s it will be a best. Most likely will end up in the 6x6 lst, as that truck will be heavy and geared lower. The 1521 1y is plenty for a lst, but I could not resist giving the 1717 a try in a lighter vehicle.

I have been looking at the Castle lineup and thought they ought to give them beer names like Tallboy, Little Kings, Fosters, and the 8 oz.

I would like to see a "Old English" myself. Or maybe something potent named "Mad Dog 20/20"!!!

Night Train would be good too!
