My Unknown. - 07.27.2010, 07:22 PM

Well I thought I would share this now since it is so close to completion.

This was once a bone stock Slash. After breaking just about everything on it it has evolved. Over I would say the coarse of, well I don't even remember how long. This was my first electric and I can't remember when I bought it. Was shortly after they came out. Now, I don't even have a name for it. It has become something else. The Unknown.

List of parts:

Rpm: Front and rear arms, front and rear carriers, front blocks, front and rear towers, rear skid, front bumper, rear bumper and motor protector, and gear cover.

Extreme Racing RC Chassis

Traxxas turnbuckles, Slash 4x4 steering bellcrank, and bigbores.

Losi springs.

FLM differential

Robinson racing steel spur and v3 slipper

Aka 17mm adapters

Hpi hellfire wing mount

Proline High downforce wing

RCMonster Custom battery tray (Best Part)

Soon to have an Integy aluminum transmission housing.

Ofna Splits with Proline Badlands

Jconcepts Bajr body.

So I figure I want to run 3s almost all the time, due to the weight of the tires. So I think I will be in the need of a bigger motor and ESC soon. As well as a high torque servo. Then I will see if the stock shafts will hold up, which I ensure you will not. So off to something stronger after they twist/break.

Otherwise I may just stick to the VXL on 2s and try buggy wheels and tires. Still up in the air. This one is not as important as the Ten T conversion.

A little teaser. I will get some better pictures when I get the tranny case on.

Are you hoping to get those rear wheels spinning fast enough at that angle to turn it into a hovercraft?

Only thing I would do is ditch those tires. Buggy badlands would do much better

I was thinking the same. That way I can stick with the 2s system. I'll just put those on When it sits on the shelf. Or try selling them. Anyone have need for a set of MT Badlands on whole offset wheels?

I hope to get some air with this guy soon. With the RCM bat mount it is very balanced front to back. Does jumps and air nicely. May have to add some weight to the front with the Aluminum tranny case. Maybe I will get an aluminum bulkhead to offset that weight.

integy tranny case over flm?

switching to buggy tires over truggy will help the driveshafts last a lot longer.

looks good

I know I know Integy is known for failure.

There was a comparism thread on the Traxxas forum regarding the different cases.

It was down to New Era, FLM, or Integy.

I liked the integy for the fact that I can add a heatsink to the motor if needed, and supposedly it will work with the RPM bumper mount and motor guard. At least that is what I understand from the comparison thread on Traxxas. FLM has there own bumper thing, and New Era is an exact replica of the stock tranny case so no heatsink.

I warn against aluminum bulkheads. Anything that would break a stocker would bend an aluminum unit. Bent bulkheads are worthless.

A bad frontal impact usually fubars the bulkhead and I prefer replacing cheap plastic

True but I am surprised at the resiliance of the Extreme Racing aluminum chassis. After the stock chassis broke this thing has taken some abuse. Not once has it bent and or broken. The front bulkhead on the Slash isn't your normal bulkhead. I don't see how an aluminum one would cause concern.

So I bought a set of Faux Badlands from suprasales on eBay, can't go wrong with a set of 4 premounts for 25 shipped.

So with that said I will be selling the Mt's though they look superb, the weight kills the project. Any takers? They are brand new.

Yet another delay.

Short story: Tower Hobbies has one stupid picker/packer.

Long Story: I order some things to complete this, they shipped separately from the Reno and Chicago warehouses. The one item that shipped from the eastern warehouse got mixed up. They sent me a coupler for a Mini Rio. They shared the same item #, but not the same first 4 letters. So I called, they apologized and shipped the supposed correct Integy tranny case. Yesterday I got all excited since the e-mail said it was waiting for me when I get home. The obvious fail was the size of the package, the fail was that they sent the exact same Mini Rio motor coupler again. I call, they apologize, sent out the supposed correct item, and hopefully that idiot gets fired.

it's the same bulkhead as a rustler, which I've bashed many of many times. Frontal impacts always fubared the bulkhead. IMO it's a good peice to leave plastic as a "give point".

Just my opinion, of course aluminum looks better

Took this guy out yesterday to run on the track a bud of mine has in his backyard. Pretty sweet with buggy wheel/tires. Running the stock tranny case. Since Tower screwed me. Temps were high. About 170 or so, geared 13/56 32p with vxl on 2s. I hope the metal tranny case will bring those temps down.

I went to the LHS to get some slightly higher rated springs for the rear, since I have been bottoming out a bit. Found another nice set of losi's to solve that. Went back to the track to test and they worked like a charm.

Quick Q? What weight diff oil do you all run in the rear of your 2wd? I have 100k in there now, and I know it is never good to run that thick in the rear, but I had the thick stuff in there since this guy was mostly ran in sand up till now.

I'll get some more pictures up over the weekend. Looks pretty slick with the buggy wheels, that and I don't have to get a bigger servo.

Still have those new MT wheels sitting around too you guys. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink!
