Anyone ever have fun with the Nigerian scam? - 12.05.2010, 02:11 PM

I was going through some stuff today and came across a check i recieved from a car i had listed on craigslist a few yrs back. It was a Nigerian scam and i knew it but decided to have some fun with it. I gave them my real address but a fake name..... Hugh Jardon.....say it a few times, and you will see where i am going with this. This was not the only time i had fun with this, I have listed 3 cars on CL in the last few years and every time i have recieved an email from a Nigerian scammer. The other names i have chosen to give them were Richard Goesinya and Phil R. Rupp. I had plans on framing these and hanging them in my shop but i just never got around to it. I cant find the other 2 checks but here is one of them.

So how does the scam work in this case? I get the email scams all the time but this is new to me.

the nigerian scam plays like this: you list an item, they email you wanting to buy the item. then they email back saying they are sending you a check for a few thousand more than you want for the itme so you can in turn Western Union that extra money to the "shipping company" to cover shipping costs. A week or so later your bank calls you and says that the check you deposited was no good and you are stuck owing the bank a few thousand dollars. The scammers are never interested in what you are selling, they will never come and try to actually pick it up, they are only interested in the few thousand extra dollars you just sent them.

Some pretty funny stories, they get those guys to do all kinds of crazy stuff and send pics of it.

I would be VERY careful about giving them your real address though, even with a fake name. The chances of anything happening are remote, but just not worth it.

When I get those scammer emails I email them back calling them everything under the Sun that involves goats and lube. The foulest of names and anything surely to offend then put their addy in my blocked Spam folder.

@simplechamp: on pg11 of the Anus computers thread. Most epic of all epic threads. Better than the NOS energy drink in the gas tank meme. :)

My personal favorite telemarketer annoyance tool is to refer them to my marketing director, who happens to be named Richard Beater. But we all call him Dick. I tell them he is not here but to call back, I get the best laugh when I get a call the next day asking for Dick Beater...

Of course I have no marketing director, and would never hire a guy named Richard Beater. But it is very funny to hear some foreign guy say it. So funny my other employees usually have to cover their mouths and I have seen some spit their drinks on the floor.
