Lipo Damage? - 03.28.2011, 07:47 PM

Hello guys, I just got a lipo in a trade and it seems to have some damage to the shrink wrap. Its all the way through the outer wrap and the silver film is damaged as well. What do you guys think? Is it salvagable?

Sorry about the crappy pic, its the best my cellphone can do.

If I were you I would be sticking that in a bucket of salty water for a few days. If it was me I would remove that damaged cell and make it just a 5S pack. If you are going to attempt this make sure your soldering skills are up to the task (also your soldering equipment too). Either way there is no way I would attempt to use or charge a lipo in that state.

I abree with big block, that pack should be made into a 5s pack and dispose of the damaged cell. DO NOT try charging the pack as it is or you may be looking for a new place to call home

What did you trade for a damaged LiPo? Nothing of real value, I hope.

Have you contacted the person you traded with? Did they say it was in good shape or was it just assumed?

Hey, I sold him those lipos for a good price and there is nothing wrong with them. Leaving the deal between me and Obeast out of this.

I find it hard to believe that you guys have never had any of your lipo get a dent in them and if you did you trashed a perfectly good lipo. Okay maybe there are a few out there that have. Imean the prices of lipos are not what they use to be so whats another 50 - 100 dollars to HobbyKind.

I know there are others out there that have had dented edges on their lips. I have had more then a couple lipos that have had dented edges. I sold him those lipos with only a couple runs on them. In full confidence there is nothing to worry about. Other then the blemish the lipo will perform just like new (which it is) and will last just as long as the other lipo. I stake my reputation on that base on experience and experience alone. I have had more then one lipo in my day with the edges dented in and they went on live long and full lifes in my rc stable. The cell are all good and balance. Was checked before I mailed them out.

I would not take a perfeclty good 6s lipo and turn it into a 5s because the edges were dented. Have you guys had any experience with damaged lipos before. I mean really the one the start a fire in your back room? There is not puffing the cells are all matched. There is no performance difference between the lipo with the dent and the one with out.

Just wondering..... Is there anybody else out there ever have you lipo come out and get dented? What did you do with it? Did you toss it in a bucket of saltwater? Remember the day when one 4s lipo cost 275 dollars. I denfinately didn't dismantle a lipo becuase of a dent and spend another 275 for one. I kept using it, and using it, and using it. Energizer bunny.... Get it?

Good. I can't believe someone would actually try to trade that. Hopefully it was ignorance on their part to the dangers and not intentional dishonesty.

EDIT: I agree with What's_nitro, maybe it's just the pic but it looks like more than a dent.

The corner of the cell looks like it's torn open...............that isn't a "dent".

I too have run "dented" lipos without issue in the past, although I did watch them closely. But I would never run anything that has been torn open, nor would I try to repair a cell that has been torn. Not worth the chance. Pic is blurry, but it looks torn open to me too. Time to break out the soldering iron...

No it was not ignorance. It was giving a good deal to a RCM member. The package I sold was a good price. I passed those 6s lipos onto Obeast for 50 less then I paid only a couple week prior. Secondly I am a reputable saler on all the forums including ebay. If I make a mistake I admit it and make it right. The lipos is fine but if the buyer isn't happy I don't have any problems refunding the item for any reason. Unless they fry the Futaba 3pm I sell them and say it arrived that way. Old ebay wound.

I did have the lipo here in my hand not less then a week ago. It was not a hole then and I don't see how it could be one now. I packed them in nice and tight in the box with the charger and power supplies. It's tough to make a judgement call looking at a picture and not getting the rest of it of the facts of the deal or condition of the sale. The picture makes it look bad but is it damaged or did he actually just get two basically new (3 cycles) 6s 5000mah lipo for 50 off the sticker price. Then on to the idiot that tried to pass off a new lipo. You guys just jumped to the conclusion it was someone trying ot scam Obeast and take his money. I can understand because we do try and take care of one another here. Don't we? So passing on a good buy to another member is usuaully one of the ways we do it.

Anyways enought time spent here. It's all mood point now..... or is it.

Since I am getting out of the hobby I will not be able to test the lipo and report back to tell anyone if it was a bomb or a great buy. So I will need a volunteer from the RCM forum that has been here for at least a year. Someone who post often enought and has a rc setup for 6s lipo. If obeast return the lipo I will send the volunteer the lipo in question under the condition you give it hell and use the crap out of it. Then 6 months come back and let us know if it took a dump or not and which cell it was.

Any volunteers brave enough to charge and run a 6s 5000mAh 30c lipo with some damage on the corner?

would I be happy if I expected a like new lipo and received this? No

would I run it and just keep an eye on it if it were mine? Absolutely

The voltmeter tells us if a cell has been compromised. If that "tear" affected the cell in any way it would lose voltage and not be comparable to the others.

I'm surprised that even on RCM there is so much fear based paranoia about lipos. Wrap that puppy with electric tape and let 'er buck.
