540 brushed motor - 04.06.2011, 10:10 AM

OK guys here's a tough one....I think.

My B&D cordless drill just died on me, sudden loss of power and loads of thick black smoke belching out. Motor is DOA for sure.

This is the kind of motor you can't service, I can't anyway. So I need to find a replacement for it. Found an e-store with B&D replacement parts, but my drill isn't listed. Already googled all the numbers on the can. All I know it's a Johnson Electric motor, with a 16t pinion. I think it's 540 anyway, dimension are 38x56mm.

Thought you guys might be able to help, a new drill is not in the budget right now.

When you can get a new cordless drill with batteries for ~$60 why would you even consider buying a new motor ( probably at least $20) and be stuck with old batteries. Maybe not in the budget but I know I could find a way to come up with an extra $40 if I needed the drill to do something.

The kind of drill that can be had that cheap over here, are not even worthy of drilling holes in a stick of butter. I'm looking at at least 250$ for a decent unit.

Your working with a black and decker! It doesn't get much lower than that! Sorry I had to say it. B&D's go for $30 at the local walmart

Yeah I've never really been happy with this unit at all. It would be a solid #1 on my top ten of most regrettable purchases.

Seems I might have found a local dude who may have a motor lying around. If that falls through I may just have to get a new one.

You can purchase a brand new Ryobi 18volt drill with a charger and two batteris for $100 from The Home Depot. Replacing a motor in any drill these days is just a waste of time if you ask me. One can find all kinds of online deals if you do a little research. If you do not have access to these kinds of stores make a friend with someone who can and work out a deal. And in retort to your comment about what you can get where you are located, since you don't show your location in your profile I have no idea where you are located or what you have access to in the way of battery powered handtools.

Oh yea and B&D are one of the cheapest power tools on the market these days. They are what people buy when they can not afford anything better. You get what you pay for, right? I had a Ryobi multi purpose 8 piece powertool set for about 4 or 5 years before I had to replace the cells in the batteries and the drill finally fried some kind of diode on the trigger last July after 7 years, so I trashed it and got a new one. I finally broke down and got one of those new Ryobi drill kits and it came with the charger and two Lipo battery packs for $100 on sale at The Home Depot. Anything is better than a B&D.

Ahh, I must have forgotten to update my locale information.

I'm in Denmark.

I found an online outlet with a better choice, I'm between a Hitachi 14.4v Li-ion and a Makita 18v li-ion unit.

Well the Makita has always been known to be one of the best powertool manufacturers, but they also usually come with a higher pricetag as well. Hitache has come a long way over the last ten years and also makes a pretty nice range of handheld powertools as well. I think either way you will end up with a pretty good tool. Good luck with your purchase sir.

Thank you.

Just found a sale on a AEG 18v ni-cd unit. It's older technology, but I use my drill maybe 6 times a year. So I feel li-ion is a bit too much money to spend. This drill just happened to give out when I was halfway in drilling all the holes in my new CF chassis for my 8ight-e.

I asked around about AEG today, and the consensus is that it's good quality. We'll see.

If you ever want a very nice drill go makita. My 18v Liion Makita is to say the least awesome. Very light compared to the old Nimh battery types and crazy power. It was $450 though. Sad fact is you could probably by the same drill at you home depot or whatever you have over there in the US for half that.

I'm not sure where you would get a motor like that though sorry. Only thing I could find on ebay where they tamiya/Johnson 540s. They don't have the torque ring and I have no idea if they are the same wind? Looking at the Johnson website though the ones that a rebadged as tamiya seem to be high RPM low torque. Not exactly you want in a drill.

I found a replacement motor, but will have to buy tools to replace the pinion, that just doesn't seem worth it since I was never happy with this POS drill.

I'm just gonna have to suck it up and get a new one. Good thing I just get heating money back, but I wasn't planning on spending them on this. Bugger.

We all have our own reality to deal with. Budgets are tight all over, and we have to find a way to live within those limits. Repairing some items is just simple economics, and for some it just does not make sense to spend money to fix a broken tool that is a piece of crap to begin with. With the options available to you your just going to have to find a way to come up with the funds for a new drill period. Even if you have to wait.

In comparison we have to find a way to come up with enough money to purcahse two brand new Pro Mac-books for our boys to be able to attend the international high school (9th grade) next year (Sept/2011) where they are presently attending middle school (8th grade). The cheapest and safest purchase for us will cost about $1600 each, and $3200 for both laptops. And this is after the US Gov is paying over $16K per child for them to attend the school in the first place. We already have five laptops in our household, but none of them are Mac's which is a requirement for this high school. Yet we will find a way to acqure them no matter what. I am sure you can find a way to justify $100 purchase for a new drill setup. Sell some other stuff, or get a part time job for a month and make some extra cash. I am presently awaiting some job openings within our community so I can begin working and making some extra income for our family. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Just to give you an idea of whats out there for the taking. Here is a multi device battery powered tool kit for about $200 that has everything you might need to take care of business around the house.

http://www.amazon.com/Factory-Recond...d=3AD3ST8PPUWM

A flashlight, a sawzall, a circular saw, a drill, two Lipo batteries, and a charger for $200. You can not beat that, and reliability is very good. Acquiring two replacement Lipo batteries alone are selling for just under $200. So deals are out there if you search for them. And on certain days you can find these same kits on sale for 20-30% off.
