I am planning to utilize Autodesk Inventor to design my next Savage, still getting my way around it, quite different in concept cause I am used to Autocad and 3DS MAX.
Anyway its a long learning path, in the meantime you cannot but just have fun. Did some modeling, other parts were downloaded from the net; places like google warehouse and grabcad. Assembeled the whole truck with proper constraints and added some rotational movement to the wheels.

Very cool

I am a big fan of Inventor. Used it for quite a while at my last job, and really liked working with it. Great software IMO.

Never did get into simulations though, that's pretty BA.

Yup, it's a savage. I can tell by how often it's on its lid.
That's really cool. We learned autocad in school, and one of my final projects was with Civil3D (being a civil engineer and all). I kind of miss working with cad programs.

Cool, so WheelMan might be needing some tips from your side ;) Yeah I agree fell in love with it from when I started working on it, very different in concept from ACAD and 3DSMAX.

brainanator, Yeah on its lid! LOL even in simulations! Thats why I am experimenting to see if I can do some modifications before I start milling the pieces on my CNC. Still have to sort out the specific details to closely match reality, like the K of springs, Torque applied to the axles, Friction between ground and tires etc....

I see where you are coming from as I am a civil engineer by trade also. Miss the CAD too, RC got me back to CAD, 3DS and Inventor, actually Inventor cannot be considered a CAD program I think, it has a lot more dynamic simulation analysis and FEA (finite element analysis) also.

FEA can help also pinpointing the weak areas in the TVP's and bracing required.

Here's an example, which shows effect of bracing on the TVP's.
The same TVP's with same fixed points in the back, and same lateral load; but different bracing. See how much the displacement is affected!

Here you can browse some tests I was doing, to see displacement, von misses stresses and safety factor.

Hey man thanks a lot for your offer.

Its gonna be a slow project, but planning to go through with it. full time job, wife and 2 kids, hard to find time....

oh yeah, completely understandable! I think that's how it is for most of us, just workin on it when we have the time

nice FEA, we used ProEngineer as a program, which had FEA. It was more of a mechanical engineering class but we civils had to take it too. We never got too in depth in it as I think at the end of the class we were much more proficient in it than the professor since he was kind of a dingleberry.
